Für die Suche wird Lucene verwendet. Im Index stehen alle infos, unter anderem auch in ascii transkribiert. Für startsWith wird ab längeren string die entsprechende lucene funktion verwendet, für kleinere stehen die prefixe direkt im index. Die fuzzy search ist auch von lucene.

Um Datenquellen abzugleichen (zb mit Wikipedia) verwende ich zusätzlich auch andere Algorithmen (Levenshtein-Distance, etc). Diese werden bei der Suche aber nicht verwendet.

I see that already did some work. It would need to reconcile the existing adm2 with the official ones.

What needs to bootstrap is to add an admin2code. Without the admin2 code it will not be possible to link other toponyms to them.

Du darfst die lat/lng vorübergehend speichern, wenn du nachher nichts anderes damit machst als sie auf googlemaps anzuzeigen. Du darfst sie nicht auf einere andere Karte anzeigen oder die lat/lng gar jemandem übermittlen.

From my feeling I don't agree with the US supreme court. There can be a lot of effort in a data compilation work, often more work than in some music song or other protected item.
Most other countries don't share the view of the US supreme court. Every country has other laws. Even if the US supreme court allowed us explicitly to use this or that data source it would be irrelevant as there is already a lot of US data available in the public domain. In other countries where no free information is available the US laws and rulings don't count.

If you have a lot of data to insert you can send me a csv file with the information, the following fields are required: name, lat, lng, country, featurecode, featureclass. The more info (population,elevation, adm codes) the better.

I can then add it to the database as a batch process. The time to do this depends also on how easy it is for me to check the quality (to avoid duplications etc). The better the input file (already filtered for duplications and consistency then the time to complete the insert will be much faster)

'null' is the database null, not the value 'null'.
The featureCodes.txt file is just a file. In the geonames database there is no such table.

über google darf man keine 'Daten holen'. Diese wäre gegen die Nutzungsbedingungen des googlemaps API. Für Yahoo ist es meist ähnlich, auch wenn oft etwas undurchsichtig.

The service returns 200 entries per default. Bahia has over 400. If you want more than the default 200 you will have to set the maxRows parameter.

You can store it in you database as you like depending on your needs. Normally it is not a good idea to fully normalize a database, but this is up to you and depends on your requirements and what you want to achieve.
A feature code of 'null' means that it is not known.

I am fed up with this Kosovo issue and have temporarily assigned 'XK' as country code. (also for Zubin Potok and all other Kosovo toponyms that have lost the country code because of some confusion in a batch process)
