Has Kosovo recieved enough international approval to be uppgraded to a country yet. If so, when could it be done?

I have not yet heard of any ISO country code assigned to Kosovo. We could use a 'user defined' code like 'XK' as a temporary solution and change to the correct code later.

Hi Tobbe
A couple of users have told us they want us to wait for the official ISO country code.
ISO has not yet come to any decision, or at least has not yet released any information: http://www.iso.org/iso/country_codes/check_what_s_new.htm

Hi Marc
Country code is assigned as KV to Kosovo (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/kv.html) and I think that its the time that we add in Geonames. I see many travel sites on internet are depending in Geoname update to be able to identify Kosovo as it is, so its better to reference with KV I suggest.

The cia is using the fips codes and not the iso codes. There is still no iso code for Kosovo. This is the problem with codes and standards, there are so many to chose from.
Best

Hi Marc,
Any news on the countrycode for Kosovo? I am looking for a way to recognize cities in Kosovo in the allcountries table. Any suggestions?
I noticed that for example Zubin Potok (geonameid 783802), wich is in Northern Kosovo has no countrycode. Is that because it is in Kosovo?
Thanks for your time.

I am fed up with this Kosovo issue and have temporarily assigned 'XK' as country code. (also for Zubin Potok and all other Kosovo toponyms that have lost the country code because of some confusion in a batch process)

Greetings Marc -
Very interesting thread. Thanks for the update.
Considering the age of the thread (almost 2 years), the fact that the CIA considers it a country, they do not seem to be going anywhere right now, I went ahead and created the basic country information in my database.
I used 'KV' and 'KSV' for the basic character identifiers. I can always make the record 'Inactive' if things go the other way and they get swallowed back.
And when the ISO and other standard bodies catch up I will adjust the created records.
Kindest Regards,
|

Hi Marc,
I just downloaded allcountries.zip (date 7 feb 2010) and I cannot find any feature which has countrycode 'XK'

Hi Marc,
Thank you for assigning the temp country code for Kosovo. Many services that depend on Geonames will show now correct information.

Hi Marc,
you've added Pristina and some other places with the XK country code but you haven't added XK as a country code in countryInfo.
We rely on there being referential integrity between the geonames table and the countryInfo table - can you please fix?
