you are right it does not make sense like this. in the rest of the us the counties have a unique id. here the id is not unique and we will have to find another id or an other set of admin divisions

I don't see much benefit in a m:n model, it is more a theoretical discussion. There are tons of other more urgent ways to improve the database. Making the datamodel more complex would only be a pain and I don't think anybody would add data in a m:n user interface, as this is already possible with the alt names, there would be no advantage for this situation.

Unfortunately I don't speak Indonesian. There is a site here:
http://kodepos.posindonesia.co.id/
I don't see a downloadable file and I don't know whether the license allows us to use the data.

only the geonameid is unique and the admincode1 per country if <>'00'.
the asciiname bug was a manual update to remove the string 'Census Designated Place' from the names and it was forgotten to also remove it from the asciiname column.

I have create a new entry for the admin division and assigned it the geonameid as the admincode1 till it gets a fips code. I have changed the city back to PPLA, so that it becomes clear that it is a city otherwise applications searching for cities won't find it.

you are right there was a problem with input parameters exactly on the border between two oceans and it did not return any one of the two.

There are some intermediate tables to help with synchronization of different sources. The admin division list you mention is one of them. The final stuff is in the download directory.

There aren't so many earthquakes that you would need the bounding box of a city. Just take your lat/lng and add +-x to both numbers to get a bounding box.

You can use the search service if you don't have the geonameId:

On the unsalb page they write that the data is licensed under "Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works". It basically means you are not allowed to use it for anything.
