Hello Marc,
since the regions were already present in the database, I've flaged all provinces as adm2 and moved them into the acurate regions.
However, provinces don't appear as "Adm2" under their region in the geotree. Is there something I can do?

Ludovic

Hi,
The Northern Areas (id: 1168878, also known as Gilgit-Baltistan - and FIPS PK07 btw) should be flagged as adm1.

Hi,
there are 2 obsolete regions in Mongolia:
* Erdenet Hot (historical): 2051188
* Darhan Hot (historical): 2031959
But maybe there's a reason why you're keeping "historical regions" ?

Hello,
there are 20 admin1 divisions for Namibia in the GeoTree. However, there are only 13, as displayed in the ISO Subentity Codes for Namibia: http://www.geonames.org/NA/administrative-division-namibia.html
The other 7 should disappear...

Ludovic

Hi,
Guinea is divided in 8 Regions (level1) and 33 prefectures (level2). Prefectures are displayed as admin1 on GeoNames, which doesn't seem correct.
Regions are listed below:
ISO Code Subdivision name
GN-B Boké
GN-F Faranah
GN-K Kankan
GN-D Kindia
GN-L Labé
GN-M Mamou
GN-N Nzérékoré
GN-C Conakry

Hi,
Admin1 in Georgia are not correct. There are 12 of them, as listed below (with HASC, ISO, FIPS when available and GeoNamesId):
Region;HASC;ISO;FIPS;GeoNamesId
Abkhazia;GE.AB;AB;GG02;6643410
Ajaria;GE.AJ;AJ;GG04;615929
Guria;GE.GU;GU;;865538
Imereti;GE.IM;IM;;865539
Kakheti;GE.KA;KA;;865537
Kvemo Kartli;GE.KK;KK;;865536
Mtskheta-Mtianeti;GE.MM;MM;;865541
Racha-Lochkhumi-Kvemo Svaneti;GE.RK;RL;;865542
Samegrelo-Zemo Svateni;GE.SZ;SZ;;865543
Samtskhe-Javakheti;GE.SJ;SJ;;865544
Shida Kartli;GE.SD;SK;;865540
K'alak'i T'bilisi;GE.TB;TB;GG51;611716
So all 12 regions are already present on GeoNames as "Administrative divisions", but are not flagged as "1st level admin divisions" (except for Abkhazia, Ajaria, Samegrelo-Zemo Svateni and K'alak'i T'bilisi).
Note: several names are marked as [provisional] but look fine to me.
Status for other actual admin1 entries:
* Ch'khorotsqus Raioni (615141): admin2 under Samegrelo-Zemo Svateni
* Martvilis Raioni (613064): admin2 under Samegrelo-Zemo Svateni
* Zugdidis Raioni (610823): admin2 under Samegrelo-Zemo Svateni
* T’bilisis Mkhare (613064) has disappeared

Hi,
there are 3 governorates (admin1) missing in Egypt :
* Luxor (al-Uqsur)
* Helwan (Ḥelwān)
* 6th of October (es-Sādis min Oktōbar).
I can't find ISO or FIPS for those 3 (which are quite recent).
Best,
Ludovic

Hi Marc,
13 regions were created recently, which are new admin1 divisions :
* Boucle du Mouhoun
* Cascades
* Centre
* Centre Est
* Centre Nord
* Centre Ouest
* Centre Sud
* Est
* Hauts Bassins
* Nord
* Plateau Central
* Sahel
* Sud-Ouest
Unfortunately, I can't find either ISO or FIPS codes.
Here's a link to the national institute of statistics of the country, detailing regions/provinces:

Hello Marc,
as you suggested, I'll point out missing or obsolete admin divisions in several countries.
I'll start with Botswana.
The Chobe district (id 933840) has been merged with the Ngamiland province (id 933230) to form the North West province (id 933230 as well, FIPS BC11) in 2001.

Ludovic

Hello Marc,
I'll try to find some polygon information but I'm not quite sure I will succeed.
Would a file containing missing and obsolete regions (with FIPS/ISO) be usefull anyway ?

Hi Marc,
I'm sorry I'm insisting on this point.
I really need correct and up-to-date admin1 division for my application. I'm more than willing to help, but I need to know how I can do it in the most usefull way.
So I'd be glad if you could answer my previous questions, and tell me what I could do to increase the quality of the database.
Regards
Ludovic

hi Marc,
I'm sure I can find either ISO or FIPS code for missing regions.
The question is: how do you link sub-administrative levels and entities (cities, poi...) to the newly created region ?
For instance in Haiti, is the Nippes department you just created an empty object, or did you reaffect part of the Grand'Anse content ?
In the case I find an obsolete region, I imagine I can't just delete it because all the related content would become "orphan". So what's the process ?
Would it help if I provided you with a file containing missing admin1 divisions worldwide (with FIPS or ISO), along with obsolete regions?
Regards,
Ludovic

Hello,
the Grand'Anse department (admin1, GeoNameId : 3724613) in Haiti has been split in 2 in 2003.
There are now 2 departments :
* Grand'Anse
* Nippes
I'm working on admin1 subdivisions (worldwide), and several countries are not up to date (like Haiti). I'd be glad to help, but unfortunately I can't create/delete admin subdivisions. Even if I could, I wouldn't be able to link lower subdivisions, cities... to the newly created division.
Would it help if I pointed out errors in admin1, so you can make the changes ?
Regards,
Ludovic

Hi,
You name the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) as one of the top sources of the GeoNames database. However, there are lot's of gaps between both databases (I've seen many concerning the administrative divisions).
Do you take admin divisions from another database or is there a particular reason why you don't update from this one ?
