Hi Olivier
The problem that the same ADM3 are returned as children for two different ADM2s has two causes.
1. The ADM2 and the ADM3 in question don't have admin2Codes in the database. This information is still missing. Would you like to help us fix it?
2. The web service compares the admincode to return the children and simply returns the elements with the same admincodes. In this case they all have blank admincodes and the service returns it.
We have not enforced integrity constraints as many sources are not 100% complete and consistent and we would have delete a lot of information to get a fully consistent database.

Hi Simon
Thanks, it will be corrected with the next dump.
The admin1Codes.txt file is generated from the alternate names table. It is using the English version of the name.

Hallo Marco

Hi David
1. I will update the database with a row in a table with the details and send you and email when it is ready.
2. You can set a token with the webinterface on your account page. You can also specify a list of allowed ip addressed. Or if you use javascript a referrer domain or a daily credit limit per ip address. All this is optional.
3. we send it by mail, the failover is also stated on the account page (for the 99.9% plan)
4. This should be everything.

Thanks for your understanding.

Hi John
We let the database do the work for us (postgres/postgis). As for the data, we have started to accumulate data and plan to release polygon and vector data in the future. In the meantime you will have to use a search engine to find the data.

All countries in the country.txt file have been assigned a geonameid.
The question what to do with dependent countries has not yet been thoroughly discussed. I think it is a rather complex question and would deserve a thread of its own. It would make sense to list all dependencies and decided which dependency gets which feature code. At the moment I fear it is not fully consistent.

Hi Olivier
We have separated cities from administrative divisions. Cities have the feature class 'P' whereas administrative divisions (states, provinces, etc) have the feature class 'A'.
To find all the cities of a country you just have to search for all feature classes 'P'.

Hi Yascha
The cities5000 table is an extract from the geonames table. The columns are exactly the same.

There is a link called 'login' at many places of the site (for instance the front page) :

Hi
The web services are exactly the same. The main difference is that they are running on other and better servers, that are closely monitored. What it needs is an additional parameter username={your geonames useraccount} to authenticate the request and the domain name for the request is different.

The findNearbyPlaceName and findNearby services can return the closest x records within a given radius :

String parameters for the web services have to be utf8 url encoded. There is a faq entry on this topic:
http://forum.geonames.org/gforum/posts/list/8.page
The search on the server side is indeed using a customized lucene analyzer, but this should not affect you as a user of the service.
