Hi marc,

I promised a looong time ago to merge the two country files so that you can fix the countryInfo.txt export, and we should be able to get rid of the 2 separate country files.

After a *really* long vacation, I did it. here is the file :
http://www.sirika.com/data/merged.tsv

Some remarks :
It contains the data of the exported dump when it is available, and the data of the other file otherwise.

Basically, the changes I did to the CVS country file, were :
1] deletion of Serbia and montenegro (CS)
2] addition of BL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Barth%C3%A9l%C3%A9my)
3] Addition of MF (Saint Martin : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Martin_(France))
4] For some reason, the equivalentFipsCode 'FI' of Aland Islands
was in the neighbours column, so I fixed that...

I set the TLD of BL and MF to .gp, since they seem to have an officially assigned one that is not used.. Wikipedia says that .gp and .fr are used instead. So, I am not sure of what to do... I went with .gp for now...

Just tell me if you need anything else to fix the export, so we can get rid of the duplication....

BTW... after deleting CS : Serbia and Montenegro, I realized that some ADMS are linked to this country... (and probably some features too)

Since the country does not exist anymore, how are we supposed to handle the case... ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbia_and_Montenegro

In the meanwhile, here is the exact same file, but with serbia and montenegro

http://www.sirika.com/data/mergedWithCs.tsv

PS: since Serbia and montenegro is not present in the dumped country file, it means that some data is definitely out of sync....

We are a developer team working with geographical info and the past June 17th we downloaded the database (allCountries, alternateNames, admin1Codes, admin2Codes and countryInfo).-
We are using SQL Server 2005 and after importing the data to the corresponding tables we proceeded to make the foreign keys and Serbia and Montenegro gave us some trouble.-
Here are the changes we made:

1) Deleted this rows in ADMIN1CODES:

CS 0 Serbia and Montenegro (general)
CS 1 Crna Gora (Montenegro)
CS 2 Srbija (Serbia)

2) Made this changes in ALLCOUNTRIES:

PLACE_ID PLACE_NAME LATITUDE LONGITUDE FEATURE F_CODE CC_ISO_OLD CC_ISO_NEW FEATURE DESC COUNTRY
6298959 Camp Bondsteel 42,58333 21,38333 S STNM CS RS meteorological station Serbia
6299779 Beograd / Surcin 44,81844 20,30914 S AIRP CS RS airport Serbia
6299780 Nis 43,33729 21,85372 S AIRP CS RS airport Serbia
6299781 Podgorica Titograd 42,35939 19,25189 S AIRP CS ME airport Montenegro
6299783 Vrsac 45,14689 21,30989 S AIRP CS RS airport Serbia
6301799 Podgorica / Golubovci 42,36666 19,25 S STNM CS ME meteorological station Montenegro

We hope that this info could help

Hugs and let us know if the data is right

Does it mean the CS country should be removed from the country file now?

In our case that was the solution.
If the country does not exist anymore, why should still exists the row?

I think we should keep it for reference for our users. A lot of them will still have records with 'CS' somewhere and would like to know what it is.

Hi,

Minor issue with the area/population fields of Serbia and Montenegro - they seem to have commas whereas none of the other records have. Also there is a missing column for the "fips equivalent" - this can be fixed by just appending a tab to the record.

By the way is there any facility available for correcting errors or modifying the records in countryInfo and the other .txt files available in the dump?

Hi Mike

Thanks for offering to help.

The countryInfo.txt file is in the sourceforge csv:
http://geonames.cvs.sourceforge.net/geonames/data/

The files are generated daily from the database. You can edit the records with the edit interface:
http://www.geonames.org/manual.html

Hi

I've notice 2 mistakes in the file :

The featureid of Aland Islands is 661883 (ISLAND) instead of 661882 (ADM)

The featureid of Faroe Islands is 2622009(ISLAND) instead of 2622320 (ADM)

Is it possible to update the file

Thanks

David

Hi David

I think it is actually correct. The geonameid for the admin division should be in the countryInfo file. The island feature code refers to an entity of type 'T' (islands, mountains, etc) wheras 'A' refers to countries etc.

Cheers

Hi

i 've seen that some changes has been made in countryInfo.txt but the

The featureid of Aland Islands is still 661882 (ADM)and should be 661883 (ISLAND)

The featureid of Faroe Islands is still 2622320 (ADM) and should be 2622009 (ISLAND)

do you have to validate those change? if it is a lake of time i can send you the file

Hope it helps

David

I think they are correct as they are. The feature codes 'Island' should not be in the countryInfo file as it is a different kind of feature class and code.
