The dump took incredibly long today. I don't know why. Let's hope this was a one time issue.

Heureka! Ich habe den Fehler gefunden.
Sorry, dass es so lange gedauert hat.

We have only the first three letters the so called FSA for Canada. If you use the postal code search with the parameters 'country' and 'postalcode' the search service will return the correct result:
http://ws.geonames.org/postalCodeSearch?postalcode=H3Y1X9&maxRows=10&country=ca

It is for copy right reasons that we do not have access to the full Canadian postal codes, and it is also for copyright reason that we are not allowed to include Yahoo or other services into our free webservices.

French Polynesia and the others ARE present in the database, but not all dependent countries have the PCLI feature code. See list below

Hi Cawb

You are right, this is garbage. I have removed it.
Thanks

I don't know the meaning of the (()) syntax. It is coming from the NGA.

Marc
Hallo NN

Du kannst den Webdienst benutzen um ein xml Dokument zu erhalten:
http://ws.geonames.org/search?q=adm3&maxRows=10&country=de&style=full&featureCode=ADM3

(setzte maxRows=450)

Oder du kannst das DE.zip file runterladen mit einer csv Datei und dort alles rauschlöschen was du nicht möchtest.

Hi Zwirdsch

The allcountries table has the 'international' names of a location. If you want to know the name in a particular language you have to join it with the alternate names table (using the geonameId). There you will find the local names of a place in many languages. It is a one-to-many relationship with the allcountries table as master and the alternatenames table as detail.

Fabio Giacomini from Microsoft Italy has translated the Metar weather conditions into Italian:
http://ws.geonames.org/weatherIcaoJSON?ICAO=LIRA&lang=it

clouds.null = n/a
clouds.SKC = sereno
clouds.CLR = sereno
clouds.FEW = leggermente nuvoloso
clouds.SCT = parzialmente nuvoloso
clouds.BKN = nuvolosità irregolare
clouds.OVC = coperto
clouds.VV = n/a

condition.null=n/a
condition.DZ=pioggia fine
condition.RA=pioggia
condition.SN=neve
condition.SG=neve
condition.IC=ghiaccio
condition.PL=gragnola
condition.GR=grandine

condition.BR=precipitazioni
condition.FG=nebbia
condition.FU=foschia
condition.VA=n/a
condition.SA=n/a
condition.HZ=foschia
condition.PY=umidità densa
condition.DU=n/a
condition.SQ=raffiche
condition.SS=tempesta di sabbia
condition.DS=tempesta di sabbia
condition.PO=n/a
condition.FC=n/a

condition.BC=localizzati
condition.SH=acquazzone
condition.PR=parziale
condition.TS=tempesta

The names are derived from the 'alternatenames' :

sorry, you are right.

I was looking at the wrong column. The reason is that the ADM2 don't have any codes associated with them.
What we could do is assign them the geonameid as code if we don't know the real code.
The 'real' code is usually the code used by the statistical office of the country and generally in use (like the INSEE code in France)

The problem in this case is that it links to admin1code 37, which no longer exists.

Marc
Hallo Nico

Marc
For user entry validation the postal code format pattern could also be useful. It is included in the countries.txt file in the sourceforge repository :
http://geonames.cvs.sourceforge.net/geonames/data/

Marc

PS: Samokk has merged the two country files:

Hi David

It is hard to find uptodate data that is compatible with a free license. So we have to make do with the data we have and this is not fully consistent. Administrative divisions are particularly hard as they are a a moving target. So we decided to keep inconsistent data in order to not loose information. It would be very simple to set everything to 'null' to get a consistent state.

If they are changes in administrative divisions then we only know that the admin is obsolete, but for many users it is usefull information to know that a place once belonged to this or that admin division.

Marc
David

ADMD is a generic code for administrative divisions where we don't know the level or where it does not make sense to speak of a level.

In this case it is a historic administrative division that does no longer exist :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanover_%28region%29

It should be deleted, but as it is still referenced we have temporarily moved it to ADMD before we delete it completely.

Marc
David

It is dynamically generated. Where did you find the coresponding ADM2?

Marc
Es gibt mehrere "Burstall" in Deutschland, übrigens auch auf Googlemaps.

Marc
Hi Ugo

I have just run a reverse geocoder job to assign missing admin1 code where possible. If you still see some missing data you could add it manually.

Marc
Hi Olivier

We know which toponyms are having blank admincodes. What we need to know is the information to fix the blanks. The first step is to fix the blank admincodes for the administrativ divisions.
In order to help us you could find out which code to use for each admin division (in Albania for instance). Information like this is often available from the national statistical office.
