One of the Geonames web services lets you input a lat/lng and get back the name of the country it's in, and even the administrative sub-division. I'll be doing that quite a lot but I don't want to tie up the webservices. Where can I find the data that allows me to do my own calculations to work out which country a given location is in? What algorithm do you use?

Hi John

We let the database do the work for us (postgres/postgis). As for the data, we have started to accumulate data and plan to release polygon and vector data in the future. In the meantime you will have to use a search engine to find the data.

Cheers

Marc
