You are right. I have added a link from the edit form to the feature code page.

Um Landesnamen aufzulösen würde ich die Suchfunktion mit featureCode=PCLI verwenden:
http://www.geonames.org/export/geonames-search.html
Wenn du die Suchbegriffe lokal zwischenspeicherst wird es wenige Aufrufe an den GeoNames server geben.

GeoNames is updated with NGA every couple of months. Last time was in January 2009.

Hallo Othmar
'Aichereben' hat in der toponym datenbank gefehlt, war aber bei den PLZ enthalten. Ich habe es auch bei den Toponymen zugefügt. Das geht ganz einfach: http://www.geonames.org/manual.html
Ich denke die Suche, wie du sie verwendest ist am besten geeignet.

I don't have it. You could help with it, like Christophe has helped doing it with the French postal codes.

Hi Britske
The service is does not have a parameter to query 'all' results, as 'all' results would be the entire database and is not the idea of a web service to deliver the entire database.

Do you mean these two lines:
N 60° 42' 0'' E 17° 10' 0''
60.7 / 17.16667
They first is degree/minutes/seconds and the second is the decimal representation of the same coordinates.

hast du eine url wo man sehen kann wie es umgesetzt wird? Mit den vorliegenden Informationen weiss man weder, was das Problem ist, noch wie das Programm im Detail umgesetzt wurde.

I have added two alternate names for those places. One with language code 'haw' and the reverse apostrophe and the other without language code and the reverse apostrophe removed. For the latter I have also converted the "Ā" into "A".

The postal codes and the geonames dump files are different datasets.

Hi David
No, the alternate names file does not contain all postal codes for all countries.

For important applications I would suggest to use the commercial services:
http://www.geonames.org/commercial-webservices.html
Only for the commercial services can we buy enough hardware and pay staff to guarantee 24x7 availability.

The interruption of the free web service today had nothing to do with the subdomains you mention. They are pointing to the same physical servers.
Only for the commercial services can we buy enough hardware and pay staff to guarantee 24x7 availability.
There are a couple of reverse geocoding services:
http://www.geonames.org/export/reverse-geocoding.html
Which one you want to use depends on your use case. (otherwise we wouldn't bother to implement a range of services

both is possible. For two reasons.
- the data is not complete. for some cities we don't know the low level admin divisions.
- for historic reasons not all cities in a country are on the same admin level.

You are right it makes sense to add those as alternate names. I will do it.

you could use the secure server and send the token as post parameter. Then you are protected against sniffers.

If you are using accessing the service from a fix set of ip addresses then you can restrict access to those. Private keys are not supported.
