countrySubdivision level is missing in your output object.

Try this :

Code:
 $url="http://ws.geonames.org/countrySubdivision?lat=47.03&lng=10.2&style=full";
 $output = file_get_contents($url);
 $xml = simplexml_load_string($output);
 echo "<pre>";print_r($xml);echo "</pre>";
 echo $xml->countrySubdivision->countryName."<br />";
 echo $xml->countrySubdivision->adminName1."<br />";

Hi Cimm,

this problem is not only for Leuven.
As Marc has explained in another thread, in border regions the reverse geocoding is not perfect and may locate a place in a neighbouring area :
http://forum.geonames.org/gforum/posts/list/448.page#4499

At the moment, we have no way to fix it automatically.

To help fixing wrong places, you may prepare a mass-update :

1/ download BE country daily dump :
http://download.geonames.org/export/dump/BE.zip
from this page :
http://download.geonames.org/export/dump/

2/ edit BE.txt in Excel to fix wrong data

3/ save the file as BE.csv and send it to Marc to update the database.

Hi Pierre,

sounds like this is exactly the same city but in another language :
http://www.geonames.org/2747351/s-hertogenbosch.html

May you check all alternate names ?

Hi Rali,

There is an undocumented parameter 'name_startsWith' for this kind of query :

http://ws.geonames.org/search?name_startsWith=plovdi
1) and 2) have been fixed by Marc.
1) Thanks for pointing this.
It is not a Firefox 3 only problem : same bug with Opera 9.
We are investigating.

2) There is a bug with CZ country boundaries.
Will be fixed very soon.

List of french airfields/airports has been updated.

Main names come from "Journal Officiel" :
http://admi.net/jo/20080201/_DEVA0802214K.html

Commercial names, or old names, are stored as alternate names. Ex:

Carcassonne-Salvaza is official name for LFMK
Commercial name Carcassonne en Pays Cathare is an alternate name.

Ajaccio-Napoléon-Bonaparte is official name for LFKJ
Previous name Campo Dell'Oro is an alternate name.

List by "region" :
http://geotree.geonames.org/?id=FR&find=ADM1:AIR&weather=none

List by "departement" with local temperature :
http://geotree.geonames.org/?id=FR&find=ADM2:AIR&weather=C

Fixed. A link between Leuven and the province was missing.

There is still a lot of work to do for Belgium :
- link "sections of commune" (PPLX) to "communes" (PPL)
- translate place names in other languages

Would you like to help us ?
Now you can display weather (at least local temperature) for ADM1 and ADM2 places.

Just add weather parameter to geotree URL :
&weather=C to display temperature in Celsius
&weather=F for Fahrenheit

Weather in Spain :
http://geotree.geonames.org/?id=ES&weather=C

Temperature is retrieved from closest weather station using GeoNames webservice :
findNearByWeatherJSON
http://www.geonames.org/export/JSON-webservices.html#findNearByWeatherJSON

Warning : there is an additional cost of one webservice call by place,
so this may slow down GeoTree. Use with care.

To disable weather option use : &weather=none

Postal codes for Belgium are more or less outdated.
We are on the way to move them as alternate names with pseudo langcode 'post' as already done for France.

Leuven :

Would you like to help us updating Belgium data ?
Administrative divisions (ADM1/2/3/4) have been updated :
http://geotree.geonames.org/?id=BE

Still in progress :
- sections de commune (PPL)
- postal codes as alternane names
Yes. Cities and sections of cities will be fixed too.
Hi Ugo
you are right : administratives divisions for Belgium have to be fixed in GeoNames.

There should be 3 ADM1 :
BRU Brussels Capital Region
VLG Flemish Region
WAL Wallonia

Then 10 ADM2 (provinces),
43 ADM3 (districts)
and ADM4 (municipalities).

This will be done before end of june.
Marc : most of the postcodes in your list are "special" ones (for the army or banks). Not sure it is important to store them in GeoNames.

1. I will have a look to the missing ones like 69003
2. You are right : a PPLA4 flag would be useful.
Search for 75014 :
http://www.geonames.org/search.html?q=75014
returns :
http://www.geonames.org/2989781/paris-14.html

Search for 75015 :
http://www.geonames.org/search.html?q=75015
returns :
http://www.geonames.org/2970479/paris-15.html

What's wrong ?
May you explain a bit more ?
Hi Isa,

you are right, there were a limit of 200 children per item.
This has been fixed.

Your query should now work as expected :
http://geotree.geonames.org/3104324/
GeoTree is using the GeoNames hierarchical webservices:
http://www.geonames.org/export/place-hierarchy.html
Hierarchy ws works for any item,
when children ws returns only administrative subdivisions :
http://www.geonames.org/export/place-hierarchy.html#children

To browse hierarchy in a more visual way, use GeoTree :
http://geotree.geonames.org/?focus=3022610

Hi Sami,

as explained in GeoTree Credits section,
country flags come from http://flags.blogpotato.de/
other flags and coats of arms from Wikipedia.

At the moment they are stored in a CSV file :
Code:
 GeoNameId	URL
 3038033	http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/71/Alzacja_herb.png/100px-Alzacja_herb.png
 3037350	http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/72/Blason_de_l%27Aquitaine_et_de_la_Guyenne.svg/100px-Blason_de_l%27Aquitaine_et_de_la_Guyenne.svg.png
 3035876	http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c8/Blason_de_l%27Auvergne.svg/100px-Blason_de_l%27Auvergne.svg.png
 3030967	http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/cc/Blason_fr_Bourgogne.svg/100px-Blason_fr_Bourgogne.svg.png
 3030293	http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/26/COA_fr_BRE.svg/100px-COA_fr_BRE.svg.png
 3027939	http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2d/Blason_Centre.svg/100px-Blason_Centre.svg.png
 etc...

Mapping was easy for France using adminCode3/adminCode4 found on wikipedia pages.

Would you like to help us for some other countries ?

I suggest to GeoTree manager to use the flags published by FOTW (Flags Of the World)
Thanks for your suggestion.
Did you see any error on GeoTree flags ?
All the images are freely reusable, under a special FOTW license which forbids commercial usage.
FOTW license is not clear enough : there are many pictures coming from other websites like :
http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/pl-wp-ko.html
including an image from :
http://www.koscian.psp.wlkp.pl/index.php?strona=glowna
there is a risk of copyright violation here.
