You are right : this syntax should work.
@Marc : is it easy to implement ?

If you need to get all countries, use countryInfo webservice :
http://www.geonames.org/export/web-services.html#countryInfo
You can post here in french.

Pouvez-vous préciser votre besoin avec un exemple.

Why is this 2007 data you refer me to not reflected in your Geonames data?

In my todo list.

what it means when its mentioned that "PPLC takes precedence over PPLA).

It means that a PPLC is also a PPLA.
Ex: Paris is a capital (PPLC) and also seat of a first-order administrative division (PPLA)
Did you look at postalCodeLookup and postalCodeSearch webservices ?
http://www.geonames.org/export/ws-overview.html
The most recent legal population for France is 2007.
Here you can find XLS files by ADM1/2/3/4 :

Have a look to :
http://www.ipinfodb.com/

There is XML API :
http://www.ipinfodb.com/ip_location_api.php

and JSON API :

Try "Save as..."
No server-side code : only HTML and javascript.

I have used a different more updated source (INSEE 2006) to update the population info for French cities over 10,000. Is this source suitable?

Looks good.
Thanks
Due to recent server crash, the download folder was missing.

I just wanted to check that you were ok with the source for French city population data mentioned above

www.toutes-les-villes.com does not sound like a trusted site.
They do not explain where data come from. Is it estimated population ? or census ? or from another website ?
If you are interested in updating population, please find a better source.

I've noticed that the population info for France is often missing. If I were to give you a file with all the French cities and their population ...

Hi Chloé
may you tell us what is your source for France population updates ?

noovea wrote:
Is it possible to have the zipcode of DOM-TOM too please ?

Not sure they are up-to-date in GeoNames.
I will check and let you know.
A lot of cities have more than one postal code depending on the street.
