1. Ja es sollten alle Gemeinde ADM3 sein. Die ADMD sind wahrscheinlich ein Überbleibsel als jemand nicht wusste was genau es ist.
2. Gemeinden sollten alle ADM3 sein. PPL ist für Ortschaften vorgesehen.
4. Es gibt oft mehrere Ortschaften in einer Gemeinde. Ist in der Schweiz ja ähnlich.
5. In der Gemeinde Datei hat es PLZ. Die PLZ ordnen wir aber normalerweise dem PPL und nicht der Gemeinde zu. In einer Gemeinde kann es ja mehrere PLZ geben. Wenn du eine Zuordnung zu einem PPL machen kannst können wir die PLZ als alternate name mit dem Sprachcode 'post' einfügen.

For Canada we only have the first three letters, the so called FSA. You have to pass the country code, then we will strip the trailing characters.

Ich fürchte es liegt an der Überlast, so dass sich was aufgehängt hat. Seit 17:22 sollte es wieder funktionieren.

Im Dezember ist die Anzahl Abfragen auf über 60 Millionen gestiegen. Ich bin dabei einen neuen Server einzurichten, dann sollte es wieder besser gehen. Der Donation link ist übrigens hier :

It is not only planned to allow users to edit address information, the information will also be included in the dump. I don't know when it will be implemented. We only have limited resources and our priorities depend on datasets available and what our users are asking for.

You are right, there is something wrong here. I will fix it. The districts are as ADMD in the database but they should have ADM1. The semantic web service is looking for ADM1s after the country level, if it does not find anything it returns the cities instead.

There are a couple of conistency checks in place and we will a lot more. Internally we keep track of where the data is coming from and we also plan to release this information. For the time being it is not our first priority. At the moment we are focusing on adding new data and fixing errors.
You are welcome to fix errors and help us integrate new datasets.

There is an API for creating and updating GeoNames toponyms. The creation service will return the GeoNameId of the newly created record. The GeoNameId is indeed an immutable sequence number. Please contact me for details, the API is not yet officically released.

We are intestested in POIs of general interests like museusm, restaurants, and so on.

Danke. Ich hätte nur besser lesen müssen was du geschrieben hast dann wäre es klar gewesen.

Eine Frage habe ich jetzt aber doch noch. Wir haben jetzt 98 ADM2. Auf dieser Seite von Statistik Austria schreiben sie "Das Bundesgebiet gliedert sich in 99 Politische Bezirke und zwar 15 Statutarstädte und 84 Landbezirke. Die Politischen Bezirke stellen die unterste Verwaltungseinheit der staatlichen Verwaltung dar." :

Ich habe die neuen Änderungen auch nachgeführt. Jetzt haben wir 98 ADM2 in Österreich :

Langsam kommen wir der Sache näher. In der Datei von Statistik Austria hat es 122 Bezirke.

Sankt Veit habe ich umbennant, Eisenstadt auf ADM2 gesetzt. Für Wels etc habe ich neue ADM2 Toponyme eingefügt. Das haben wir auch in anderen Ländern schon so gemacht, da die administrative division von der Stadt bei der Suche etc anders behandelt wird.
In diesem Fall kann man durchaus die 'amtlichen' Namen für den Hauptnamen verwenden. Der Hauptname sollte ein international verständlicher Name sein. Für lokale varianten dient der 'alteratename' table.

Das Ziel ist auch die Hauptdatenbank auf ISO zu wechseln, wenn möglich für alle Länder gleichzeitig, was nicht so einfach ist, da in vielen Ländern keine 1:1 Beziehung besteht ....

Für Österreichische PLZ liefert die Österreichische Post, die Daten. Die PLZ in Österreich sind nicht eindeutig, deshalb kriegst du viele Resultate.

Ich denke zuerst sollten wir die Bezirke sauber aufräumen, und dann die Gemeinden.

1. the postal code data has been combined with bfs data. The 'Kirchturmspitz' data file available on the bfs web site has not yet been integrated in the GeoNames main database, as we have not yet been allowed to do so for copyright reasons.

2. Not all postal services offer postal code dataset like the Swiss Post. For India the accuracy problem is refering to incorrect lat/lng.

3. The dump is exported daily, and we update as often as possible. You help is welcome

There are some checks when inserting or changing records. The problem is that thousans of records have an inexistant (or no longer existant) code. To clean this up will be a lot of work.

What I could do is to set them to null and keep an additional table for reference if someone has time to look at it. Disadvantage is that if the half-wrong information is deleted is will be difficult for contributors to know that some information exists. Sometimes it probably just needs an update as the fips code may have changed in recent years and the dependent topony was not modified accordingly.
