Is there a separate database with the shapes of the time zones, or is the existing geoname data used to provide the timezone service (i.e. calculate the nearest geoname and return its timezone).

If there is a separate spatial database of the timezone shapes, is that available? Thanks for any answers or assistance.

Hi Mark

The datasets used are discussed in the initial thread :

Thanks Marc. I still could not find a single "dataset" which defines the shapes of the various timezones. I'm trying to see if Arthur Olson would host such a data set in the ZoneInfo project as a canonical reference. Do you think the underling Geonames timezone shape data would be a good starting point?

Hi Mark

Sure it could be a starting point and we could merge the various shapes into one database.

Cheers

Marc
