Hi Marc,
We were wondering if it might be possible to bulk update the population info for cities that currently incorrectly display a population of 0, if we provide you with that information in a spreadsheet?
For example we have the correct information for Sweden - would you be able to use it in bulk?
Thanks,
Chloé

This would be a nice contribution. I can update the records easily if you have a file with geonameid and population.

Hi Marc,
I'm attaching a file that has the population info for cities in Sweden, the spreadsheet includes the Geonameid.
Let me know if you have problems opening it.
Thanks,
Chloé

Hi Marc,
We'd also like to contribute the admin 2 parent codes for cities in the attached spreadsheet.
Thanks,
Chloé

Hi Chloé

I can open the file and I have started updating the first records. Then I realized that all places with the same name are mapped to the same adm2 code in the file. There seems to be something wrong with the mapping, normally places with the same name should be located in different adm2 divisions.

Hi Marc,

We're working on that for Sweden, we'll get the new file for you asap.

I've noticed that the population info for France is often missing. If I were to give you a file with all the French cities and their population - would admin 2 be the most appropriate extra info to differentiate cities that share the same name? How would that info be the most useful for you? would 4 columns: Geoname ID | cityname | department code (2 or 3 digits) | population work for you?

Thanks,
Chloé

Hi Marc,
This is the source I'm proposing to use, for all cities above 10,000 because in Geonames many are missing population outright and are at 0..

Hi Marc,
We added admin 1 for all of the cities. The duplicates are due to duplicates in Geonames - same cities, with identical admin 1 & 2 but different Geonameids. For the moment we've left those in there because we didn't have the time to review all of the Geonames data to determine which of the cities are legitimate and which should be removed.
I hope you can use this data.
Best,
Chloé

Hi Marc,
I just wanted to check that you were ok with the source for French city population data mentioned above?
Thanks,
Chloé

www.toutes-les-villes.com does not sound like a trusted site.
They do not explain where data come from. Is it estimated population ? or census ? or from another website ?
If you are interested in updating population, please find a better source.

Hi Marc,
I understand your concern, although http://www.aufeminin.com/ whom they belong to is a big brand name.
I'm especially interested in updating the info for cities over 10,000 in population that currently have 0 as population on Geonames. Arguably, anything closer to the proper population may be of better use than the current "0" value - would you be willing to update just those cities?
Thanks,
Chloé

Hi Marc,
I have used a different more updated source (INSEE 2006) to update the population info for French cities over 10,000 in the hopes, especially, of resolving the problem of the cities that are incorrectly at 0 population. Is this source suitable?
Thanks,
Chloé

Hi Marc,
Please ignore the data for Swedish admin1 & 2 parents in the spreadsheet above, it's not actually valid with all the duplicates. If we find it useful in the next few months we will go over all the duplicates and determine which are legitimate locations and what their correct parent admins are.

Chloé

Hi Marc,
Attached is a similar spreadsheet with PPL GeoNamesids for the cities in France with population above 10,000. The data you need is on sheet 1 in the following order:
geonamesid, PPL name, admin2, population.
Thanks,
Chloé
