The faulty disk was replaced but the server continues to switch into read-only mode after a couple of minutes under load.
I fear some more hardware needs to be replaced and the server needs to be setup from scratch. This will take around 2 days.

you find the geonameid for the admin regions over their admincode.

PPLs are populated places (in fact they should be changed to PPLA3) and ADM3 are admin divisions. There is a listing for each of these two concepts.

Christer: the service does not distinguish between northern and southern hemisphere.
DataZombies: there are no plans to add anything more to the services regarding zoneinfo. This would be outside of the scope of this project.

the service is down due to a disk crash. It will take some hours to exchange the disk.

There is a problem with the download server. It crashed twice today when trying to import the database dump from the www server. I had to disable the dump till we have fixed the hardware issue. I suspect a disk issue.

Hi
I cross checked on the usps website and could not find these changes. The cities are listed with the 852xx zip codes instead of the 851xx :
http://zip4.usps.com/zip4/citytown.jsp
(for instance Mesa, AZ with 8520x)
Are you living in the area and can you confirm that the change really took place?

Once per month will be sufficient. You could subscribe to the 'postal code' category in this forum to stay informed about bigger updates. Corrections of a couple of codes are usually not announced.

It is not regularly updated, it is updated if we know of changes.

Because it has its' own ISO country code. There are also other dependent countries with their own country code.

Hi Julien
I have updated the Swiss adm division adm2,adm3 with the 2009 data as I couldn't find a national dataset with the 2010 data:

I have deleted the entry.
It takes time for the admin divisions as it requires a systematic approach.
We are working on reorganizing the admin division, first by comparing different sources (fips, iso) and fixing the inconsistencies: http://dev.geonames.org/qa/cc.html
The province in Laos still has fips and iso codes. We have added two new columns to the subdivs to manage 'from' and 'to' dates:

The problem with Ceuta and Melilla is that they have a very strange status. They are not really adm1 like the other autonomous regions and they don't have a proper adm1 code in none of the coding systems (neither iso, nor fips). The spanish INE assigns a code like it does for the municipios. From this point of view it would be adm3.

It was the same problem. The cache has not yet been updated with the changes in the adm2 codes.

there was a problem with the service for some hours and it did not return observations for most locations. We are investigating the source of the problem.
