The upper limit that I thougth of currently is 500.

I was wondering if the server-side web service code will be open-sourced at any point? I'm quite interested in how it is able to disambiguate place names (e.g. Madrid, Spain instead of Madrid, USA).

I'm guessing it uses population and feature class (and similar) to identify the most likely candidate?

name : name of geographical point (utf

varchar(200)
asciiname : name of geographical point in plain ascii characters, varchar(200)

admin1Codes.txt file have only utf8 names for administrative subdivision

is it possible to have plain ascii characters for administrative subdivision?

Problem gelöst .. mir war nicht klar, dass die beiden Parameter "radius" und "maxRows" in Kombination angewendet werden können/sollten. Lasse ich den Parameter "maxRows" weg, so erhalte ich nur eine sehr geringe Zahl an Datensätzen zurück, egal welchen Radius ich vorgebe. Mit gesetztem "maxRows" ist alles klar.

erstmal vielen Dank für die Bereitstellung dieses tollen Webservices. Nachdem ich einige Stunden mit opengeodb rumprobiert hatte wollte sich der Erfolg immer noch nicht einstellen. Der geonames-XML-Webservice ist eigentlich genau das, was ich für meine Anwendung brauche. Eine Sache ist mir allerdings unklar: Wenn ich die Suche mittels radius-parameter eingrenze, bekomme ich nur Ergebnisse bis ca. 25km zurück. Ist dies ein Bug, oder eine gewollte Beschränkung? Lässt sich dies irgendwie geschickt umgehen?

Searching on Kiruna i get in the result "Kiruna Municipality" as place and "Kiruna Kommun" (Municipality) as second-order admin division.

The town name is "Kiruna" so why are both called municipality. And why isn't "Kiruna" the official name?

australia post supply a list of postcode & suburb info - so you can use it to link the suburb info to postcode

Die Ländernamen sind in allen gängigen Sprachen verfügbar. Ausser den beiden neuen : Serbien und Mazedonien.
Der Aufwand programmatisch etwas zu ändern ist viel grösser als die Namen für die beiden zusammenzutragen. Und letzteres muss sowieso gemacht werden.

Is there a similar undocumented parameter for the postal code search? I would like to be able to retrieve all postal codes in a given country which begin with a particular prefix. Is this possible at this time?

Im Hinblick auf die im Geobreich üblichen Datenmengen ja eher lächerlich winzig sind aber doch ein paar Standorte von ollen Mühlen zusammentgekommen und wir haben bei unserem Projekt das Alphastadium wohl hinter uns, will heißen eingetragenen Mühlen behalten zumindest ihre ID.
Wenn Ihr die Daten übernehmen wollt, solltet Ihr beachten, daß wir auch historische Standorte bei uns aufgenommen haben, für einen Datenbankmenschen sicher kein Problem. Wenn es Verständnisfragen bezüglich einer Überführung in Eure Codes gibt, stehe ich für Rückfragen gerne zur Verfügung.

We need POI's for worldwide cities - for example, railway stations, underground stations, airports etc.

Does the database contain these features? I could not find any reference.
