Is there a way to query the web service and retreive a (previously fetched) geoname by the geonameId?

Would it also be possible to limit results from the same current administrative division as the search point?

Reverse Geocoding near a provincial border could confuse some people when the results aren't in the same province.
I'm trying to use the Geocoding service to find the nearest municipality to the input I give it, however it sometimes picks up neighborhoods in my city.

Here's some results:
Nearest Location:
Country: Canada
Prov./State: Alberta
City: Calgary
Lat: 51.050112282
Lng: -114.085285152

Nearest Location:
Country: Canada
Prov./State: Alberta
City: Silver Springs
Lat: 51.100111099
Lng: -114.151988207

Nearest Location:
Country: Canada
Prov./State: Alberta
City: Forest Lawn
Lat: 51.033412191
Lng: -113.968676512

Now I guess, is there any way I can, or you can implement, so that for all these searches Calgary is returned? Possible to do it by population?

It seems as though the GeoCoder is returning the nearest feature, could a field be added to the result to display the city that feature is in as well? that would solve my problem..
I recently downloaded the geonames database dump to use for checking the address of the properties in our data.
Would it be possible to send me the postal codes dump of the european countries?

Additionally I need to figure out the assignment of places to regions: like "Zell am See" (geonameid=2760634)is located in "Pinzgau" (geonameid=2768802), "Mitterpinzgau" (geonameid=2771403). Is there any way to find this in the database dump?

please send the data to hwieser (at) nethotels (dot) com
I must have corrupted the georss.jar because all I did was to download the jar with source and it started working.

Weird!

I am having trouble with this line of code:

GeoRSSModule geoRSSModule = GeoRSSUtils.getGeoRSS(entry);

If I pass a non geo rss feed I get a null pointer exception.

I cant figure out how to check it for null.

I tried:
converting it to a string an checking for null.
I tried:
if(geoRSSModule.equals(null))
if(geoRSSModule == null)
etc..
Still I get the null pointer.

Any ideas?
Thanks.
Hi,
do you also offer a database dump with the georeferenced wikipedia articles?
If not my question is how you extract the information from wikipedia?
I'm interested in the german wiki datasets.

greets,
Tim
OK I figured it out.

1 other problem.

I want to be able to input any RSS feed geo or otherwise.

What I am doing currently is the following:

Code:

             SyndFeed feed = input.build(new XmlReader(url));
              List entries = feed.getEntries();
                 for (Iterator it=entries.iterator();it.hasNext();)
                 {
                     SyndEntry entry = (SyndEntry) it.next();
                     GeoRSSModule geoRSSModule = GeoRSSUtils.getGeoRSS(entry);
                 }
                 if(geoRSSModule != null)
                 {
                  System.out.println("NOT NULL");
                  out.println(convert.getGeoJSON2(feed));
                 }
                 else
                 {
                     System.out.println("NULL");
                     out.println(convert.getJSON(feed));
                 }
         }

I am trying to test for null on geoRSSModule but am not successful. Is there another way to check the feed for georss?

Thanks again!

Hello all,
I am using the georss module.

I was successful with using this a month ago.
Recently I revisited my code and now I am receiving the following error:

Code:
java.lang.ClassCastException: com.sun.syndication.feed.module.georss.SimpleModuleImpl
         at com.sun.syndication.feed.module.georss.GeoRSSUtils.getGeoRSS(Unknown Source)

I tried using the simple example on http://georss.geonames.org/

Specifically:
[/url]

Code:

    SyndFeedInput input = new SyndFeedInput();
    SyndFeed feed = input.build(new XmlReader(new URL(
          "http://www.geonames.org/recent-changes.xml")));

    List entries = feed.getEntries();
    for (SyndEntry entry : entries) {
         GeoRSSModule geoRSSModule = GeoRSSUtils.getGeoRSS(entry);
         System.out.println(entry.getTitle() + " : lat="
               + geoRSSModule.getLatitude() + ",lng="
               + geoRSSModule.getLongitude() + ", desc="
               + entry.getDescription().getValue() + "; time="
               + entry.getPublishedDate());
    }

The error is pointing to this line:
GeoRSSModule geoRSSModule = GeoRSSUtils.getGeoRSS(entry);

Any ideas?
TIA!
Marc,

Many thanks for your reply.

Keep us updated on open sourcing the RSS to GeoRSS. I would be particularly interested in the place name disambiguation methods that have been used, as it is something I am looking into at the moment. I would welcome any advice you may have - software that was used, tecbniques, best practice, etc.

Matt
