Just wanted to drop in and say that this is useful for me also
Can you send me postal codes from spain to geonames (at) zaitez.com?

tanks a lot.
ROU is the current ISO code for Romania. It was changed from ROM a few years ago.
Not possible !
Never.
All it takes is someone stubbern enough, thats me .
I in fact already have a substantial portion of the required dataset to provide a fairly comprehensive package for Australia , and the US, the main problem I am having is that I simply dont have the time I need to get/decifer/extract the postal code information for every country on an individual basis.
I have found the raw datasets for many countries, but of cource every one of them is in a completely different format. This is why I was hoping to have a look at the current geonames.org postal code dataset, I figured youve already been there, and it would save me the efort , at least for whatever countries you have postal code info for, of standardising all these datasets.
What do I do to get special characters in a text file dump.
If these are url encoded - can someone point me to a decoder ?
This is an example of a "place" in the text file.
Country Poland code 92-219
Łódź
thanks!
Hi Marc,
I sent a request to the info (at) geonames (dot) org.

Our new service is using the API right now for global postal code lookup. its working well, but would like to convert to database to reduce the number of network calls and parsing.

Let me the the requirements for the global postal code database dump that you maintain. We will gladly donate / give full credit where needed.

You can contact me at clientcare (at) soaptray (dot) com.

Thank you kindly.
I noticed the UK postal codes have the last digits after the space trimmed off them (like 'DA9 9BA' is 'DA9'), and I believe canada is similiar. I need to know which countries have abbreviated postal codes so I can trim that postal code before searching the postal code database. Is there a list of countries with their post code modifications?

thanks!
Hello,
I need the Postal code for germany too, please send at: plz@tripsbytips.com

Big thx

Paul
FYI, but your service is returning the wrong media type for the RDF/XML; it's returning text/xml instead of application/rdf+xml.

e.g. http://ws.geonames.org/rdf?geonameId=2950159

Thanks.
Hi,

We are currently creating a start-up that will make use of the Geonames dataset to locate cities. Geonames will be the first open source project we give money to, as soon as we make some (We use quite a lot of Open source stuff, and will give money back whenever we can : "We love open source because it is open source, not just because it's free"). Once we have money, I have nothing against buying support / updates / whatever concerning Open Source.

My worry was about the project's goal. I completly understand the fact that any community-driven project goes wherever the community wants it to go. I just wanted to make sure about the good intentions

Concerning my contribution to Geonames: The first thing I might be able to contribute is a list of Wines (crus) associated to their respective cities. (It is not currently associated to cities, only zipcodes, so there might be some work involved..) (so that people can easily GIS localize wines..). Concerning INSEE Names, well, I am currently (struggling to/working on) to get Lucene/Compass to work correctly and efficiently, in order to index all the city names. Once all this is working, fuzzy-matching INSEE Names against All possible names of each PPL feature should give pretty good results. I'll spend some time hacking on that once my search engine works

In any case, if I do some programming tasks that might be useful for Geonames, I'll for sure contribute it.

Sami Dalouche
Since I don't really know where to give feedback about this, here is a (unstructured ) post about some errors I have spotted :

- In the country List :
AX ALA 248 FI Aland Islands Mariehamn

FI FIN 246 FI Finland Helsinki 337030.0 5223442
EU fi-FI,smn,sv-FI

The FIPS Code of Aland Islands and Finland seems to be the same. I checked the official FIPS Code, and FI seems to be given to Finland. And, I may be wrong, but I think FIPS codes are supposed to be unique, aren't they ?

Another error I spotted :

CN CHN 156 CH China Beijing 9596960.0 1306313812
AS bo,i,ii,za,zh-CN

China seems to be linked to the "i" language, which is not a 639-1 code...

Is there a better way to help correcting stuff like that than reporting it on the forum ?

Regards,
Sami Dalouche

Hello, I'm very happy to see Geonames's support for OWL and RDF. I read through the Geonames ontology, and put together an overview of it. Not sure if my interpretation of the ontology's semantics is all accurate.

Comments are welcome.

First of all - amazing site. We'll be donating some money soon, as this is of great use to us.

We are implementing a web services means to exchange data, but in the meantime I could *really* use a dump of Postal Code information for New Zealand. In particular, I need:

- postal code
- latitude
- longitude

It would be nice to get the "Admin2" area as well, but that's not vital.

Thanks! Please let me know if there is anything more you need. You can e-mail me at: erik (at) archondev (dot) com
Thanks for this hint.

Is there a possibility to receive a file which I can import into a database?
Hello admins,
