The service has been modified to use the first 4 letters for 7letter codes and the first 3 for 6 letter codes (if there is no blank)

Thanks for spotting the xml tag name. I have renamed it.
This tagname issue is the first and only error reported so far for this new service. The more it is used and tested the faster we can declare it production ready. On the commercial servers it has not yet been activated, we first want to run it on the free servers for at least a week more.

GeoNames has only the first part of the UK postal codes. If the postal code is longer then the part after the blank is cut (example 2). If no blank is within the code then the first three letters are used.
Maybe it would be better to cut after four letters it the total number of letter is 7. What do you think?

Hi Marlies
I have made the check for valid language codes more restrictive (http://forum.geonames.org/gforum/posts/list/1492.page), and due to an error it was too restrictive and refused valid codes. This has just been fixed.

Thanks for your work. I will implement a check on the interface to make sure the codes users enter are valid.

Thanks a lot for the link.
There are no plans to include streets comprehensively in the main data base. It would blow up the data volume by order of magnitudes and make it much more complex for the large majority of users who are not interested in street names.
It is possible that in the future we will offer reverse geocoding services for other countries: http://www.geonames.org/maps/reverse-geocoder.html

The map on the documentation page is using the web service, they cannot be different. There is even a link below the address to the web service response at this location.

There is no history available. It is anyhow advisable to download a full dump every couple of months to be sure to not loose any modifications.

I remember we had once discussed a 'name_contains' service, but it has not been implemented.

the service returns the closest address, if there is no house number available at this street segment then it does not return one. As simple as that.

It is difficult to say, without knowing the lat/lng we speak about. I would assume there is no other data available and this point.

If I understand you correctly then the names should be written with lowercase in Swedish and uppercase in English/Internationalname?
For the main name we use international names and for local and other names there is a tab called 'alternate names'. Please feel free to add Swedish names for the places: http://www.geonames.org/manual.html
Yr.no will then use the correct name from the alternate names.
