Would you like to have user comments for inserts and updates or for alternate names or both?

Marc

Ideally it would be a Talk: page as in Wikipedia. But comments on both would be useful for contrary editions.

An example would be the Parliament of Catalonia http://www.geonames.org/maps/geonameId=6252066
http://www.parlament-cat.net/portal/page?_pageid=34,34135&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

It is not "HSEC country house a large house, mansion, or chateau, on a large estate". It is in a park, but was never a countryside residence.
However my change to "Building" was reverted. I'd like to explain why it should not be HSEC.

Hi,

I would have to get your mind about a low answer time when I search in geonames web service only the first time.

Indeed, I'm developping a webmapping interface using Cartoweb and I use the search in Geonames in order to "zoom" on an area of interest (AOI).
Everything is working, but I don't understand why the first search is always very slow... and sometimes no response...

I would like you to check on my web interface just to have a look on
this problem and maybe to tell me what to do to optimize my first
search...

The url is http://dev.sandre.eaufrance.fr/ogcviewer/ then go on the window tab, on the right, called 'AOI' (for Area of Interest). Then
you can perform a search as you perform in Geonames (the search is
only for these country : France, Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guyana,
Reunion)

Any idea about this trouble??? any suggestion?

Thanks for your help.

Nice website , but I really don't know how to change into google maps.

anybody can help with this!!
I have seen that some user editions have handmade comments instead of the automatic ones.

Is there a way to leave a comment explaining changes from the Web interface?

A lot of toponyms don't belong to one single country but to several countries : regions, lakes, rivers, mountains,...

Do you think it would be worth the time to add edit functions for country information? Something like the edit interface for alternate names.

It could be nice, supposing that later they are findable by each of the countries.
At least there should be an option to blank the country.

Hi Marc,

In the gns database they have "Cataluña" (translation to the Castilian of an official name) instead of "Catalunya", official name of this one country.
You can fix this error to your database?

Thank you Marc

In this case geonames tries to be too clever and automatically finds the country for the toponyms. I have to delete the country code manually. Just tell me when you add a new region and I will delete the country code.

These seem supranational. Not all are mine:

North Africa ( http://www.geonames.org/maps/geonameId=2219875 )
Panonian Basin ( http://www.geonames.org/maps/google_47.0_19.0.html )
Galicia ( http://www.geonames.org/maps/google_49.5_23.0.html )
Armenia (including independent Armenia and neighbouring Armenian regions in other countries) ( http://www.geonames.org/maps/geonameId=145495 )
Punjab ( http://www.geonames.org/maps/google_30.0_74.0.html )
Southern Asia ( http://www.geonames.org/maps/geonameId=6269134 )
Middle East ( http://www.geonames.org/maps/google_33.139060475388_35.8586883544922.html )
Levant ( http://www.geonames.org/maps/geonameId=305104 )
Polynesia ( http://www.geonames.org/maps/google_-10.0_-150.0.html )

Hi,
I'm trying to pull up a list of countries with English as the default language for the name of the country and select languages ie: EN, DE, FR, ES, JA, ZH, RU, HE, SV, BG, PT, FI, KO. If the country isn't translated in any of the above selected languages then DB would return empty string or NULL and finally in the last column it would output the postal code style format and if none then NULL or an empty string.

Then after this if possible a way to get an output of ADM1 for a selected country in that country's main language.

I have been successfull in doing the above using the HTML search but not with the XML search and with the countries I can't select which languages to display in the HTML search.

The purpose of this is to store in a MySQL database to be dynamically pulled by PHP for Java-Script drop down menu.

First user selects Country (Displayed in their native language) then if the country has ADM1 specified then that Drop Down gets populated. Based on the country the Postal Code would either be grayed out or available and the input limit would be specified.

Sorry for the long and drawn out explanation. I'm hoping to grab just the data I need and host data on the server localy. Of course I'll be giving full credit to GeoNames.
I added Southern Cone but it is marked as a part of Argentina. It should be supranational. How?

What is the correct category for supranational regions like Southern Cone, Western Europe, Middle East? Region, area?
Hello Marc,

thanks for your answer.

I was referring to wikipedia.org of course. Thanks for the information. Just to make me sure that I get this right. I have geocoded some articles with the wikipedia tags {{coor dms|...|type:landmark|region:PL}}}}. Like for example this one:
http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadion_Olimpijski_we_Wroc%C5%82awiu

(sorry, only Polish version available).

Am I right that with the next load from Wikipedia this article will be visible in geonames as landmark? Or shall I do anything else?

Best regards,
Szymon
I was tagging languages in Antigua Guatemala, and the English name was clipped to "The Most Noble and Most Loyal City of Santiago of the Knight". I think it was followed with "s of Goathemala"
Hello,

i send you an email about the possibility to have this db about belgium if possible.

Thx a lot to you.

Marc

it works great. thanks for taking the time to do this. For me, the priority countries are all the english speaking ones, US, UK, Canada, Australia etc

magesh, which platform/language are you using on your site? PHP, ASP, Java or something else? You need to select the relevant web service from this page :

http://www.geonames.org/export/

and then use your platform or language to query the web service and process the resulting XML data

Thanks for this service, and want to mark, that needed also dump of this table with relations between countries, regions and cities.
Hi,

I'm searching for a database with all postal-codes of germany. I need this list for a random route calculation.

Is there a chance to get a txt-file with all postal-codes of germany? I only need those postal-codes of cities not of p.o.box.

Thx for any answer

Hello,

I'm new to geonames. I thik I've read all the published doc's, but stil
I can't find answer to the question that bothers me. I would like to know what is the logic behind integrating landmarks from Wiki to geonames. Let's suppose that I have a landmark description in Wiki and I've geotagged it with coord tag in Wiki. When will it be visible in geonames?? What is the data replication mechanism, how often is the replication of data done and what data is replicated?

Best regards,
Szymon
hi marc

country and first subdivision would be brilliant. In fact, I'd say it would fit the requirements of most users. It's enough to differnetiate between ambiguous place names but not so much that it would cause an information overload for users.

thanks for your help
