Landmarks from Wiki  XML

Hello,

I'm new to geonames. I thik I've read all the published doc's, but stil
I can't find answer to the question that bothers me. I would like to know what is the logic behind integrating landmarks from Wiki to geonames. Let's suppose that I have a landmark description in Wiki and I've geotagged it with coord tag in Wiki. When will it be visible in geonames?? What is the data replication mechanism, how often is the replication of data done and what data is replicated?

Best regards,
Szymon

Hi Szymon

I guess with Wiki you are referring to Wikipedia.

The Wikipedia data is loaded periodically into geonames. If you geotag a Wikipedia article, it will become visible in geonames after the next data load.

This happens usually once a month.

The dump files currently (June 12 2006) loaded are :

plwiki-20060514-pages-articles.xml
dewiki-20060515-pages-articles.xml
enwiki-20060518-pages-articles.xml
eswiki-20060521-pages-articles.xml

Hello Marc,

thanks for your answer.

I was referring to wikipedia.org of course. Thanks for the information. Just to make me sure that I get this right. I have geocoded some articles with the wikipedia tags {{coor dms|...|type:landmark|region:PL}}}}. Like for example this one:
http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadion_Olimpijski_we_Wroc%C5%82awiu

(sorry, only Polish version available).

Am I right that with the next load from Wikipedia this article will be visible in geonames as landmark? Or shall I do anything else?

Best regards,
Szymon

Hello Szymon

This is perfect, it will be included in the next wikipedia load.

Hello Szymon

Your entries are now included with the newest load of the wikipedia dumps:

http://www.geonames.org/wikipedia-search.html?q=Stadion+Olimpijski+we+Wroc%C5%82awiu&lang=pl

Someone has changed the tag into : {{koordynaty nr|

Thanks to your posting I checked this entry and modified our parser to also parse the koordynaty tag. I think it is a pity a lot of wikipedia editors have fun inventing their own tags and not sticking to standards. It makes it very difficult to parse wikipedia data.

Hello Marc

My question is sort of dual of Szymon.

I understand the logic of Wikipedia articles being included as long as they are geo-tagged. But how come some Wikipedia articles are included whereas no geotagging can be found in the article?
See e.g. http://www.geonames.org/maps/google_44.3266_6.8072.html and look for french Wikipedia
You find the two entries
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Col_de_la_Bonette
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Col_de_Restefond
The latter redirects to the former in Wikipedia, by the way, and neither contains the faintest mark of geotagging as far as I can tell.

How does the miracle occur? Is it possible to manually add a Wikipedia entry?

Salut Bernard

I don't know whether I should really speak about our trade secrets here in the forum

The German version of this article is geotagged. This is how we figure it out, we compare the articles in different languages and if one language is geotagged we use it :
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Col_de_Restefond

I am aware that we don't really take into account redirection in wikipedia.

Cheers

Ach, wunderbach
BTW would be a good idea for Wikipedia, a bot adding the coordinates found in one page to the equivalent page(s) in other languages.

How can I see the full list of the Wikipedia tags in various languages which you consider as georaphic coordinates?

Hi Andy

You can browse the tags on google maps for each language starting from here :
http://www.geonames.org/wikipedia.html

There is also a full text search :
http://www.geonames.org/wikipedia-search.html

And you can download the dump :
http://forum.geonames.org/gforum/posts/list/126.page

Cheers

Marc
