first, thanks for such a great service! Badly needed and very much appreciated, thanks guys.

One thing I'd like to be able to to do is given a geonamesid for a location, look up it's parent locations to form a hierarchy. So if you have the id for a district of a town, you'd then be able to get the town itself, followed by the state, followed by the country.

is anything like this possible?
Great
I'll pop that up tomorrow morning, as well as a little note here on what we're doing.
Terrific. Do you have a standard format or graphic for the credit/attribution?
hallo marc

Hi there.

I try to combine several services on the web, and I was happy to see that the geonames web services use the ISO 3166 standard for country codes. Now, according to the website of iso.org (link below), the country code for United Kingdom should be 'GB', but the search service returned me 'UK'. Can this be fixed please?

Thanks Marc,

this new feature will be very useful!

Maybe you should add this modification in the Geonames search Webservices Description Page.

hallo,

mario

Hi,

I would like to do a query using the WebServices.
How can I do to search on several country, but not all.

I try this way :
http://ws.geonames.org/search?q=myquery&country=FR&country=GP
or this way:
http://ws.geonames.org/search?q=lac&country=GP,FR

but it's not working.

Any idea please?

Thanks for your help
There seems to be some errors with postal code geocoding for Mumbai, India. The postal code divisions are there, but the coordinates are spread all over India - I can't see an obvious pattern or correction that could be made.

Try 400049 (Juhu) or Vile Parle (400057 east and 400056 for west). These are scattered across the sub-continent, despite being walking distance apart in real life!

The database has these coded with an odd spelling for Mumbai, which may be because the codes are known to be wrong already:
Admin1=Maharashtra Admin2=Mumbbai

Apart from that, other Indian postcodes I've checked have been spot on, and South African ones too generally (except some odd Cape Town ones). Keep up the excellent work!

best wishes
Anand
Great resource, thanks for making all of this available! I downloaded the allCountries.zip and have been playing around with it.

One thing I can't figure out: How can I find all the second-level administrative areas within a first-level administrative level? Using the U.S. as an example, how can I get all of the counties within a state?
Hi Marc

Thats Greate!!! I can see it....

Thanks

Technically GB and UK are different places.

GB stands for Great Britain (e.g. England, Wales and Scotland), while UK means The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. So in official documents you'll nearly always see UK (for example in my passport and drivers licience) while alot of people still use GB as a synonym for UK. Also the plate on the back of cars from the UK is GB.

According to http://www.jhall.demon.co.uk/currency/ it was to do with Ukraine, which fits with what I believed too.

The use of "GB" for "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" surprises some people. However, the United Kingdom and the Ukraine both wanted "UK" so rather than start World War III over the matter, the United Kingdom was assigned "GB" and the Ukraine was assigned "UA."
Thank you for the fast action!

With lat="37.373636" lng="-121.972146", or lat="37.372783" lng="-121.974549", the zip code should be 95051. But the returned code was 95120 before the change, and is 95054 now.
Please also correct this.

Thank you again!
Check the Wikipedia Bounding box web service integration with google map to see the problem at
http://www.globefeed.com
With lat="37.3875" lng="-121.9635", I got a returned zip code of 95120, but the correct one should be 95054.
Could you correct this? Or how could we help correct the database?

Hi,

When I tried integrating results from Wikipedia Bounding Box Web service to google map with limited number of results(using maxRows=10), the Results are not spread evenly, but they get collected arround some point of the map area.
The algorithm similar to cities web service should be used to spread the result evenly.

Thanks
Sameer
Hi,
Can we get an API to search for findNearbyPlace given longitude and latitude. I need this in order to run it locally with out any internet connection. Reply me asap.

Thanks in advance
Another one i found: in french news paper "le monde", it shows an article about "new orleans" in orleans in france...
Hi,

In the documentation of this web service maxRows parameter is specified, but when I am using it, it is not affecting the result. Am I doing anything wrong

I want this maxRows so that I will able to implement it with google map simlilar to cities like in
http://www.globefeed.com
please help...
Thanks Marc

Great Work...
But I think some parameters like maxRows, style are missing in the Wikipedia Bounding box Web Service.
The maxRows is realy important parameter to get limited data
Please update me on this.
