the database is periodically updated with nga. For a couple of countries the admin divisions have been changed and other sources are used because users were not happy with the way it was.

The abbreviation codes for Canadian provinces have been added to the database only recently and this update to the search index was not yet deployed on all servers.

They are capitals of states or provinces and it is to be assumed they have larger population. And even if they should have slightly less than 1000, they still belong to the list as being of some relevance.

it is not a bug, just missing data. Feel free to help add it: http://www.geonames.org/manual.html

I have added the missing adm1 codes for Greece, deriving them from the admin2 code. Do not use the algorithm David is suggesting if you don't want to have a lot of errors.

RGNE is the correct code. PPLS stands for a group of buildings, smaller than a neighbourhood.

Do you also know which correct character they should stand for? I have correct the first toponyms in Xavis list with geonameid < 6400000. For the later I would have to figure out the correct character. It is possible they have been corrected in the nga data source, but I did not yet have a look.

The feature class is in the titles here:
http://www.geonames.org/export/codes.html
The feature codes are grouped by their feature class.

The state did not yet have a Portuguese name. I have added it:

It will become active with the next update.

The 'openflights' database is using a restrictive share-alike license. This means we are not allowed to use the data.
I really don't understand why people call their projects 'open' when they want to use a very restrictive license and don't allow other people to use the data.

Hi Fred
Thanks. A generic 'Mill' featurecode is certainly sufficient. We could add the other info as tag. For other feature codes we nearly no entries at all I think we should also just delete the entries if there is no more generic code that could be used. It is not very useful to have only one or two entries of something (Ex: language school).
As for the new featurecodes you mentioned. Which ones should we add? For fuel stations or supermarkets it could be possible to use other large sources. Do the large petrol companies have international listings of stations? We have to be careful with wikipedia, because it is only called 'the free Encyclopedia'. In reality it is not free, the license is rather restrictive. It depends which data is used and how it is used to decide whether it is allowed. It is a pity that they did not choose a free license, it would have been a far more useful project with an open and free license.
