Hi Eddie
The geonameId is used once and only once. Delete geonameIds will not be reused.

Hi Timo
The raw data is in the attribute observation. Right now it is "LSZH 231420Z 28008KT 250V320 9999 FEW075 SCT300 24/05 Q1021 NOSIG".
This is all information we have and I cannot see any weather condition in it.
Two online METAR decoders are here :
http://heras-gilsanz.com/manuel/METAR-Decoder.html
http://www.wx-now.com/Weather/MetarDecode.aspx
Both of them don't display any weather condition for the observation above .

Thanks. It was a bug with null-value handling.

Hi j oliver
There is a service called "findNearby" that returns all feature codes :
http://forum.geonames.org/gforum/posts/list/203.page#1086
The service also accepts the parameters featureClass and featureCode.

I am not aware of any problems. Do you have an example line of data that is missing in the alternate names full dump?

Hi Alex
Why did you use 'space' as column delimiter? The geonames dump files use tabulator '\t'.

Hallo Fred
Gruss

Hi Isa
Yes, only the locations with a adminCode2 will have data in this field.

Hi Isa
The search service returns this information :
http://ws.geonames.org/search?q=steinen&maxRows=10&style=full&country=de
I believe we will have to change the adminCode2 for Germany from the abrevation to the official AGS (Amtlicher Gemeindschlüssel) the German counterpart to the Spanish INE code or the French INSEE code. For Freiburg the AGS is 083, 08 for Baden-Württemberg and the 3 for Freiburg. The Kreis "Freiburg im Breisgau" has the AGS 08311000.

Roman Rachkov has translated the over 650 geonames feature codes and feature classes into Bulgarian.
It is now possible to get the search web service response entirely in Bulgarian. Example :
http://ws.geonames.org/search?q=bg&maxRows=10&style=LONG&lang=bg
The translated feature codes are here : http://www.geonames.org/docs/Feature_Codes.ods

Hi Sami
I have added a comment header to the file countryInfo.txt : http://download.geonames.org/export/dump/countryInfo.txt
A header with explanation is required anyhow and it could be sufficient. There are only a handful of countries with special currencies. I don't know how much sense it makes to automatically parse them as every application has to decide what to do with these special cases.

Hi Timo
The documentation for the street level reverse geocoder for the US is here :
http://www.geonames.org/maps/reverse-geocoder.html
The street data is from the US census TIGER data set (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing system). It is available on the website of the US census and updated twice per year.
The geonames export only contains data we actively manage and modify. Data we only use is available elsewhere.

Bulgaria has the following administrative divisions :
ADM1 : Oblast (28 )
ADM2 : Obshtina (264)
ADM3 : Kmetstvo (2560) and Rajon (35) for 3 big cities: Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna
Thanks to Roman Rachkov for his help.

For Switzerland we are using the following administrative divisions (as of 2009) :
ADM1 = cantons (26)
ADM2 = districts (166), 'Wahlbezirke' in Cantons without 'Bezirke'.
ADM3 = communities (2642)

Hallo Thorsten
Die Information zu welchem PPL ein PPLX gehört haben wir noch nicht aufbereitet. Du kannst es aber rausfinden indem du zu jedem PPLX das nächstgelegenen PPL suchst.
Gruss

Hi Isa
The number of alternate names per language is unlimited. For Paris we have alone four alternate names in French : Paris, Lutece, Pantruche and Paname. Only the number of 'isOfficial/isPreferred' is limited to one.
For the postal codes in Paris it is a little bit more complicated, because we have an entry in the geonames database for each of the 20 Arrondissements. The postal codes 75001-75020 are assigned to the corresponding Arrondissement.
Regards
Marc

Postal codes are not yet fully integrated in the main geonames.org data set, they are available as separate download.
We have recently started to add IATA and ICAO airport codes as alternate names to airports with the pseudo languages 'iata' and 'icao'. In the same way we have now added postal codes for France as alternate names with the pseudo language code 'post'.
Example :
http://www.geonames.org/search.html?q=29560
As a consequence the RDF representation of the places now contain the postalCode element.
Example <postalCode>05200</postalCode>
This is a test to see whether adding postal codes as alternate names is the right way to go or whether we need a different form of integration. If this experiment with France proofs successful we will add postal codes for other countries as well as alternate names.
What do you think?
