the search is based on the full text search engine library lucene. It is not a simple sql command.

The same coordinate for two different places is normally a rounding problem. Some data sources round their coordinate to 30''

Hi Brandon

The 'time' element was brand new and it was supposed to contain the current local time. There was a bug and it displayed the time on the server instead.

Marc
Hi Julian

Are we speaking of GB.ENG, GB.NIR,GB.SCT and GB.WLS? I can find them in the admin1Codes.txt file.

Marc
It is not a normal behaviour. It is a consequence of the services becoming too popular. We will introduce a limit on the number of request per day and IP address. This should help with the service quality.

For professional users we recommend the commercial services :

Hi Bruno

This was a problem on our side with the name_equals parameter. I have fixed it. Thanks for having reported it.

Cheers

Marc
Hi Bruno

It was a problem with the synchronization of different servers. Maharepa has been added very recently and the ws server was not yet updated with the new entry.

Corine

I will add geonameids for the territories you mention.

Countries, places and all other features can have as many names per language as they like per design. There are two flags 'isPreferred' and 'isShortName' to flag some of the names for the same language.

Other flags that we have not yet introduced good be 'coloquial' etc

Marc
provinces have the feature code ADM1, reference to provinces is in the column admin1Code.

Marc
Hi Oliver

I change the underlying polygons and Serbia is now included, together with the Vatican and others.

Marc
Hi Corine

Thanks for pointing this out. I have written a consistency check and fixed all problems.

You can use the total alternatenames file and delete everything that is not in the cities files.
It is very similar to the thread about alternatenames per country discussed here :
http://forum.geonames.org/gforum/posts/list/781.page

The GeoNames main table is using FIPS codes for first order administrative divisions (with some exceptions : US, UK, CH) whereas the postal code dump is using ISO codes for many countries. The codes are listed here :
http://www.geonames.org/ES/administrative-division-spain.html

The idea is to integrate the postal codes into the main dump and get rid of the separate dump and we also want to switch the admin1code to ISO.

Marc
If you want to have all results within the radius then you can add the parameter 'maxRows' :
http://ws.geonames.org/countrySubdivision?lat=57.753300&lng=-110.00000&radius=5&maxRows=10

Marc
Hi Sami

The 'name' should actually be the international name. There is something wrong with the second features. One of the western looking names should be in the 'name' field.

Marc
You can add the parameter 'radius' to define a buffer zone. This helps in coastal areas where the boundary may be too simplified :
http://ws.geonames.org/countrySubdivision?lat=54.28611&lng=-130.447222&radius=5
I found a boundary file for Canadian provinces on the US national weather service website : http://www.weather.gov/geodata/catalog/national/html/province.htm

With the new file it should work fine for Canada.

I have rerun the timezone reverse geocoding for all countries with multiple timezones.

Manually entering polygons is not easy, in particular if it should be useful. Polygons for Alaska for instance often have over 70000 points.
We are discussing with a large satellite image provider how to extract vector data from the imagery and combine it with GeoNames data, and we are also discussing with a large photo geotagging site how to extract clusters from geolocated tags.

Marc
Hi Richard

Please feel free to add missing information like missing population data. There is a wiki-style edit interface to fix issues like these ones.

http://www.geonames.org/manual.html

I have added the missing population data for the US states and also set the flag 'isShortName' and 'isPreferredName' for the 'West Virginia'.
