do not use the www subdomain for web services, this is not supported and will be taken down.
The ws.geonames.org subdomain is currently having problem. For the time being you can use the ws5.geonames.org domain.

I have enabled ws.geonames.org again to try something. But the result is the same and the server was no longer able accept connections, so I have disabled it again.
ws5.geonames.org will remain active for at least a couple of weeks, so you have time to switch back, but it will not be a permanent option.

In an ideal world the cities file would not include any obsolete codes. When the code change is a simple change than we can easily update the code, but if a region has been split into separate regions than we don't know which of the new codes is the right one, so we keep the old one as this information is still better than nothing.
You can help us figuring out what has hapend in this particular case and we can fix it.

I have temporarily removed the ws.geonames.org domain from the dns setting. You can access the server with the domain name ws5.geonames.org

If you don't want to download the daily files you will have to load the complete dump every now and then.

The problem since yesterday evening is an enormously popular iphone application called iMob. It is hammering the server with > 100 requests per second which has the effect of a DDOS attack. I am trying to get in touch with the developers to have them remove this feature from their application.

Hi Sebastian
The server has been overloaded in the last couple of days. We are trying to improve the situation with blocking access for some very heavy users.

It has always been like this. The admin2Codes.txt file includes obsolete codes.

The NGA database has less than 15000 populated places. What you have been counting are not the populated places but the alternate names. Some places have more than one name. Walberswick for instance is listed nine times in nga:
http://www.geonames.org/2634907/walberswick.html
(nga ufi = -2610762)
In GeoNames it is listed once with the alternate names in the alternate name table.
NGA is therefore 'considerably' smaller than GeoNames.

'PPL' stands for larger groups of buildings where people are permanently living. The administrative and political categorization is modelled with the featureclass 'A'. If some dispersed groups of houses share some administrative and political infrastructure and build a municipality then I wouldn't call them populated place. The entry of featureclass 'A' already expresses the idea of the municipality.
Each group of houses that has a name would get an entry of featureclass 'P', depending on the size a PPL, PPLL or PPLX.

We have been updating the database with an external datasource (nga) and the alternate name history for the daily modification does not included entries that are directly inserted in the alternatename and alternatename history without updating the main toponym history table.

If there is a populated place with the name of "Zigoitia" then there should be an entry for it. On googlemaps I cannot see anything there that looks like a populated place and if it is the name of the municipality put their is no populated place with this name then there should be no entry.

"zh" stands for both.
From the w3 website:
http://www.w3.org/International/questions/qa-css-lang.en.php
I have used the language codes "zh-Hant" and "zh-Hans". These language codes do not represent specific languages. "zh-Hant" would indicate Chinese written in Traditional Chinese script. Similarly “zh-Hans” represents Chinese written in Simplified Chinese script. This could refer to Mandarin or many other Chinese languages.
Until recently the codes "zh-TW" and "zh-CN" were used to indicate Traditional and Simplified versions of Chinese writing, respectively. In reality, "zh-TW" should indicate Chinese spoken in Taiwan, although there are more than one Chinese language spoken in Taiwan. Similarly "zh-CN" represents Chinese spoken in China (PRC). This could refer to Mandarin or any other Chinese language.

'Serbia and Montenegro' no longer exists. In the countryinfo it is still included as a reference.
The record with id 6698755 got into the database with a recent update from an external datasource (nga). I have deleted this record.
Thanks for having reported this error.

utf8 is correct. I guess it is a problem with the way you look at the data. The webpage should also be in utf8 if you print utf8 data.

The 'cities' files are just excerpts from the geoname table. The dataformat is identical.
