I hold GIS data for postalcodes and placenames in the Netherlands. I would love to give them to you so the webservice which I use is then enhanced. If interested please send me an e-mail at mlinden@zeelandnet.nl

I suppose for the most part, they can be derived from country codes.
For the countries with multiple zones, using the admin codes might work.
I guess they could be put into the admin codes table.

It would be very useful to me for the total results count to be included. I would like to display the total matches (even if I don't retrieve and parse them all).

Can it be added without mucking up everyone else's JSON result parsing though?

For now I have settled for using the XML, but I'd prefer using the shorter JSON format.

It would also be useful for me to have the content length HTTP header variable set (a pedant could argue that it is 'netiquette').

Naja, Ich will (=soll ^^) ja auch nicht wirklich etwas Vorhandenes nachbauen. Eigentlich gehts mir ja mehr um das Parsen und die Informationsextraktion von Volltexten. Darin liegt der Mehrwert zum reinen Verlinken auf Wiki-Artikel. GE dient da mehr als Spielwiese bzw Beispiel für eine praktische Anwendung. ja und "Spass"...macht mir das trotzdem

Normalerweise gar nicht. Das heisst es werden jeweils alle Placemarks im Bildausschnitt gleichzeitig samt Beschreibung geladen und wenn der Bentutzer einen Placemark anklickt kann die Beschreibung direkt ohne neu zu laden angezeigt werden.

Achso, ich glaube jetzt komme ich der Sache näher...Offenbar habe ich die Funktionsweise völlig falsch verstanden. Übermittelt wird also lediglich die Position des "Sichtzentrums" (und evtl des Zoomfaktors) aus GE. Auf dieser Basis können dann die dynamischen kml-dateien erzeugt werden!? Ansich irgendwo logisch. Ich war mir dessen aber zunächst nicht bewusst.

Ich habe inzwischen herausgefunden, dass es bereits einen Dienst gibt, der die in Wikipedia hinterlegten Koordinaten zu verschiedenen Orten auslesen kann. Hierbei werden 80 Landmarken im GE-Blickfeld angezeigt. Beim Klick auf die Landmarke erscheint daraufhin eine Landmarkenbeschreibung, die einen Link zum entsprechenden Wikipedia-Artikel enthält.

Das Ganze sieht dann so aus:

Weiterführend möchte ich nochmal auf meine ursprüngliche Idee zurückkommen. Und zwar möchte ich ein Java-Servlet schreiben, welches mir die entsprechenden Beschreibungen (-> als kml-datei) erzeugt und dann in der Beschreibung des Placemarks anzeigt. Ich möchte also Teile der entsprechenden Wikipedia-Artikel (oder andere Quellen) parsen und dann in der Placemarkbeschreibung anzeigen lassen.

Daraus resultieren 2 Fragen, vor denen ich derzeit noch stehe:

1) Mit dem oben genannten Network-Link ist ja bereits einer vorhanden. Lässt sich das trotzdem mit meiner Idee kombinieren?

2) Wie wird die Information übermittelt, welcher Placemark gerade angeklickt wurde?

Wenn wir das noch klären könnten, kann die Arbeit eigentlich schon losgehen

But i need search to be done in my website,whenever the user enters the postal code in the text box and clicks view map button,it should show the correct location on the map.

It might or might not help, but I make a file available here:
http://www.nearby.org.uk/downloads.html which is a gazetteer that includes county name.

This is based on the original GNS database so misses out on some of the corrections and other niceties of geonames.org but it might help you. (if you OK with creating your own geocoder based on it)

the same technique could be used with the geonames database, but its not trivial and is not particular accurate.

I need help for parsing xml with javascript

Hi there.

Is there any way (or any plan) to add county information to the GB set? Or is it there, and I can't see it?

For example, I can't tell apart (by their names), the two locations in the UK for "Watford":

The only difference is their co-ords.

Any advice will be appreciated.

I'm trying to use the REST service and I've found that it would be a great feature if reverse gecoding and the normal search function could be joined together.

This is what I want to do:
findNearbyPlaceName?lat=59.3&lng=17.99&radius=10&fcode=RSV

This is what works

You can use this, but it only works on BBX supplied for countries. It would be great to have a version of this that could take a BBX.

Hi there,

I find it weird that Istanbul is given a population of zero, and Kagithane a population of 9+ million.

In wikipedia, it seems that the latter is a suburb of the former, not the reverse. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kagithane)

Is this a mistake in the db, or is there some information I'm missing?

Ich bin gerade dabei ein wenig zu basteln und möchte den Text dynamisch, beim Klick auf einen Placemark, aus diversen Quellen im Internet parsen und Teile davon -als Vorschau- in dem kleinen Fenster erscheinen lassen.
Wenn ich das richtig verstehe, dann macht Ihr ja im Grunde nicht viel anders, ausser das sich Eure Zusatzinformation aus GIS-Daten zusammensetzen, oder?

Die Erstellung riesiger KML-Dateien mit statischen Beschreibungstexten möchte ich dabei gezielt umgehen.

Vielleicht könnte mir jemand einen Tip geben, wie ich das so hinbekommen kann?!

Why is it that the "United Arab Emirates" country found here: http://ws.geonames.org/search?q=Dubayy&maxRows=1&style=FULL does not show up in your country info web service (http://ws.geonames.org/countryInfo?)?

The following countries are also missing from the countryInfo webservice:

1) Code: TL -- Name: East Timor
2) Code: CS -- Name: Serbia And Montenegro

Please let me know if this is a bug, or if there is something that I over-looked and should know about how I am using your web services. kavih7@yahoo.com
