I have been using GeoNames for time zone lookups for a few weeks now with great success, but today I started getting the following in return...

{"status":{"message":"Urgent: please contact: info@geonames.org","value":12}}

Any help would be appreciated.

there is an issue with the json version of the timezone service. See the blog posting for details: http://geonames.wordpress.com/2010/03/16/ddos-part-ii/

you can add the parameter username=<your username> to overcome the blocking.

Marc,

Thanks you! That fixed me right up.

I can confirm that this resolves the issue.

Essentially our usernames are our API Key. I've just run it using 'marc' as well.

If this changes for a more formal system, I hope that we can keep both systems running at the same time for awhile so that some of us have a chance to fix and deploy. For example, getting an app through Palm takes 3 to 4 days.

The service is fantastic and I support the rooting out of clients that are not using the system efficiently.

I am writing an iPhone app for a client. The time zone lookup occurs each time the app is started up, but the app would only be used once or twice a day and then only while a user is traveling across time zones.

Will I have to do anything different when the app is finally deployed?
