Hi Marc,

we found some wrong time zone information in the database for Indonesia and it looks like the admin1codes could do with some adjustment too.

The following shows the province names as shown in Statiods, Wikipedia and Geonames with the correct Olson timezone for each. The geonames names seem to be a mixture of the English names and the Indonesian ones but with a couple that are duplicated.

Can we update all the places in geonames with the correct timezone according to their admin1_code? You might also like to standardise the names.

geonames fips code 16 is Maluku Province - I think this is the same as 29 Maluku Utara.
geonames fips code 25 is Sumatera Selatan - This is the same as 32 South Sumatra.

cheers

Julian

Thanks Julian

Fips 16 was changed to 28 in 2001 (fips06) and fips 25 to 32 in 2002 (fips07).
I have changed both right now and update the toponyms in these provinces.

I have also updated the timezone with your table, though I have used 'Asia/Pontianak' for the provinces on West and Central Borneo (11 and 13) where you are using 'Asia/Jakarta'.

As for the names we should probably rename them to the English name 'Province' and use the two local name variants 'provinsi' and 'propinsi' as alternate names.

Cheers

Hi Marc,

Asia/Pontianak is defined as WIT and so is Asia/Jakarta so that's fine.

I don't have an opinion on which language the names should be in but it should be consistent and labelled. An English alternate name labelled as English for the geonames corresponding to the admin1 names would be nice.

Cheers

The timezone webservice is still wrongly returning timezoneId Asia/Jakarta for a location in Bali:-

<geonames>
<timezone>
<countryCode>ID</countryCode>
<countryName>Indonesia</countryName>
<lat>-8.701891</lat>
<lng>115.2607223</lng>
<timezoneId>Asia/Jakarta</timezoneId>
<dstOffset>7.0</dstOffset>
<gmtOffset>7.0</gmtOffset>
<rawOffset>7.0</rawOffset>
<time>2009-05-24 11:40</time>
</timezone>
</geonames>

hello, i'm dmw from indonesia.

Asia/Jakarta should be defined as WIB instead of WIT.

indonesia divided into 3 timezones:

* WIB (Waktu Indonesia Barat, Western Indonesia Time)
i.e. Asia/Jakarta : UTC+7

* WITA (Waktu Indonesia Tengah, Central Indonesia Time)
i.e. Asia/Ujung_Pandang : UTC+8

* WIT (Waktu Indonesia Timur, Eastern Indonesia Time)
i.e. Asia/Jayapura : UTC+9

* Official name for the province Aceh (previously Daerah Istimewa Aceh) is now Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam
* Official name for the province Yogyakarta is Daerah Istimewa Jogjakarta, the capital is Jogjakarta
* Jogjakarta is also known as Yogyakarta or Jokjakarta
* Bali, prior to 31 Dec 1989 is on WIB (UTC+7), switched to WITA (UTC+8) on 1 Jan 1990. I lived in Bali at this time.
* This change also affected several other provinces in Kalimantan and/or Sulawesi
* Administrative division of Indonesia is 33 provinces, currenltly listed on geonames.org: 32

how can i help?

cheers,
dmw

Hi dmw

Names and missing toponyms and easily be corrected with the browser user interface:
http://www.geonames.org/manual.html

For the timezone we use the olson timezoneid. This id includes the daylight saving time rules, so we don't use UTC or the other names, as the Olson name is more powerfull. If the name is correct the dst of the past (and hopefully of the future, barring splits) are also included.

Hi Marc,

I believe there still some problems with the time zones in Java, Indonesia. It appears Surabaya, and the cities to the west of there within Java, have the timezone of Asia/Makassar, rather than Asia/Jakarta.

From what I can determine from various sources, is that the whole of Java is using Jakarta time, and Bali is where the Asia/Makassar time zone starts.

Many thanks for a sensational resource!

Terry

You are right, a lot of cities have not been updated to the modified data. I have run the reverse geocoder again over all entries for Indonesia.
