I know nothing about how GeoNames is operated, so apologize in advance if this is inappropriate,

but the only query that is missing JSON is extendedFindNearby and it's the only one that gives cities in the US AFAIK. Unfortunately my path to genames is via JSON.

Thanks in advance for any information.

OP here. The original question stands, but I was wrong to say that extendedFindNearby was the only way to get cities from coords. I must have gotten wrapped up in trying to figure out which inquiry works best for me. Two test cases I have are nearby and both have complications. One I posted about which I think is a bug, the other is more due to the vagaries of the US postal system and using the center of an entity rather than it's boundaries. One point is in Torrance, Calif., but the postal address is Redondo Beach, so that is somewhat unresolvable. And it's closer to Redondo city hall than Torrance. And there is an associated neighborhood name.

And I 'm trying to find criteria that work out of country. I've decided that I'll just use totally different criteria for out of country. My limited testing suggests that it's near impossible to line up geonames fields with cities, states, counties maybe even in the US, but certainly not overseas. Enough blabbing.

The original question stands:
