It's a while since I entered new data to the geonames database, and I'm having trouble with the new interface.
From what I understand one has to either enter coordinates in the search box or right click at the point where one want to add a place, and then click on the 'insert new name' button. However, I'm unable to right click anywhere on the map because I have the 'hand' cursor on the map and when I right click it just zooms the map.

The new interface is a little less user-friendly in this respect...
Worked for me: Ctrl + Right/Left-Click on Map
You should get a context menu offering you the possibility to "insert new name here".
