I've been using GeoNames for a master's thesis project and am in the last few weeks of work. I'm trying to build my final data set!
My software hit the daily limit of 30,000 queries at 4am my time last night. This is unfortunate since I took today off from my job to work on my project. I can't tell when it will resume because I don't think it could have done 30K credits in the four hours between midnight and 4am in my time zone, so it is probably based on midnight where the GN server is (Europe?). In the ten hours between Europe's midnight and New York's 4am, it's plausible that it did 30K.
I have occasionally hit the 2000/hour limit, but that's okay because at least it gives me a bit of new data every hour to work with. Also, my app will use fewer and fewer credits the longer it runs because it will have built up local data to draw on.
I've checked out the paid services, but the cheapest one that would get me any higher credits/day is 120 euros. I can ask my department about it, but it seems like overkill since I don't need the availability guarantees and will be done with the whole project in less than a month. Any suggestions to get me moving again?
