Hi all,

I am developing a tool using Google Earth and I've put in a <link> to http://www.geonames.org/servlet/geonames?srv=2&type=kml&numrows=40&P=1 from the feature-networklink.kml file into my KML. This is so that I can just list all of the villages, towns etc., and nothing else.

All is OK, but when I click on a town I get some standard text. Is there a way where I can alter this text to use my description?

Many thanks

John

The text is automatically generated from the content of the database. You can change the content if something is wrong (population etc) but you cannot edit the text itself.

The manual for editing the database is here:

Hi Marc,

Many thanks for your reply. Well, I would like to remove the spurious characters that are visible - in this instance I'm getting Code : JE ยป 00 and want to remove the Directions link. are you saying that I can't do this?

Many thanks.

PS where does Geonames stand on using their xml files, or links to geonames database in a commercial environment?.

Regards

John

You are not supposed you use this link other than for your personal usage. If you use it on your site or for your project we will have to block you. This link is not part of the free API.
You find information about the API here: http://www.geonames.org/export/

Best Regards

Marc

Hi Marc,

I wasn't aware of the api - I just got hold of a web address that connects to Geonames that is widely available on your site, and used that to display towns and cities in Google Earth through the application that I am developing.

I would be more than happy to learn about the api and licensing agreements associated, but again, I was under the impression that no licensing requirements were needed for a web address pointing to the xml file mentioned earlier.

Regards

John
