download.geonames.org/export/dump/ says this about the gtop30 field


gtopo30 : average elevation of 30'x30' (ca 900mx900m) area in meters, integer
 


30' = 30 feet, so shouldn't that be 9 meters, not 900?

30' are 30 seconds, not feet.

Ah I see. It's ambiguous then, since tick can mean either feet or seconds. I didn't think of the second interpretation.
