Hello,

I am trying to figure out what location the coordinates of countries in the allcountries table are.

As far as I can tell they don't seem to be centroids of the country shape.
They also are not the location of the capital city, nor of the largest city.

So I really wonder how are the determined?

Who can help me out?

If it is not to much to ask, could you give me some indication as how these coordinates are obtained. I am mainly interested in the coordinaties of countries and water bodies like lakes.
