I see in the (XML) reply 'toponymName' and 'name', but both are not the asciiname.
Is the asciiname automatically generated? If so, how can I do so locally?

you are right the asciiname element is not included in the xml (mainly because nobody has ever asked for it). It is generated automatically. First it was a purely home-grown implementation, later http://site.icu-project.org/ was added to the conversion.
