I would like to retrieve places (including features, not just cities) within a lat/long bounding box much as for cities or wikipedia articles.

For places, I think the closest match is findNearby with a radius in km and maxRows set to a reasonable number. Am I right? Is this radius square or round?

If I could retrieve places with bounding boxes, I could cache much easier and avoid a lot of duplication.

the radius is round. if you need a lot of data then it is better to use the dump rather than the web service.
