When I do this search:
http://ws.geonames.org/search?name_startsWith=san+fr&maxRows=40&style=LONG

the city of San Francisco, California doesn't show up in the list at all. If I add country=US, it shows up, but not without country. I don't want to ask searchers to pick their country first, so I need to figure out how to fix it.

Also, is there a way to sort the list by population?

I have tweaked the algorithm a bit, so that San Francisco now turns up at the second position.

BTW, have you ever considered allowing a parameter to sort the results by population size?
