Please excuse my ignorance, I am new to GIS but something is confusing me and it probably has a really simple answer.

I was wondering if it is normal procedure to assign your own UFI's to your geo data or if certain geo points (like say the Eiffel Tower or the city of Paris) have a standardized UFI which is recognized worldwide?

Thanks for any help!

Angela.

Hi Angela

Since you are asking this on the GeoNames forum I would say the answer is that the geonameId is the universally recognized identification id.

Best

Marc
