Sorry, I guess this probably has been asked many times in the past. Could you please tell me how the results are sorted in a standard query to GeoNames? I can see that there is some kind of ranking by importance (When querying for "Paris", "Paris, France" comes first ; When querying for "Cartagena", the one in Colombia is the first, the one in Spain second, etc), and I would like to know how this procedure works.

It is a normal full text search (term frequency–inverse document frequency) combined with the relevancy of the places.
