Dear Geonames Team,
I think it will be very helpful if we could have the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of a country in the Country Info table.

This could be very helpful to improve searching heuristics if we know our product/service is going to be used primarily by developing countries or by rich countries.

Consider the following scenario, and you know your service is going to be used primarily by the western world. You offer a search field to select a place in the world. Now you could sort your search results not only by population count but also by their per capita GDP

I am obviously willing to cooperate in adding this information to the database.

Sure, why not. We could easily add an additional column with the GDP infor the next time we change the file. I don't want to change it too often as every change breaks user's scripts to read and load the file. In the meantime you could gather the GDP info. You can post it here so that everybody can use it.
