The US has five territories, all of which are coded as countries under the ISO standard and here.

For three of them, the "alternate countries" field contains "US":
4043988 Guam https://www.geonames.org/4043988
5880801 American Samoa https://www.geonames.org/5880801
4041468 Northern Mariana Islands https://www.geonames.org/4041468/

Recommend updating the other two to have an alternate country of "US" as well:
4796775 US Virgin Islands https://www.geonames.org/4796775
4566966 Puerto Rico https://www.geonames.org/4566966

I tried but came across an error "The record you want to edit is locked for updates for userlevel1".

I also suggest doing the same for each country that has a code of "A: PCLD dependent political entity" or "A: TERR territory", such as:
3573511 Anguilla (with UK) https://www.geonames.org/3573511
3573345 Bermuda (with UK) https://www.geonames.org/3573345/bermuda.html
3425505 Greenland (with DK) https://www.geonames.org/3425505/greenland.html
etc.
