A very ordinary afternoon and a box of crayons
I don’t remember exactly what day it was, but I was too tired to read, too bored to watch movies, and my mind was running wild like a bunch of kids who couldn’t sit still. While cleaning out my desk drawer, I found a black and white coloring page – a picture of a cat wearing a birthday hat that I had downloaded for my nephew to color.
Without thinking much, I took out an old box of crayons. At first, I only intended to “draw for fun”. But after just a few strokes, I felt something different. Each stroke of color seemed to calm my thoughts. Each filled-in space was a tangled space that was gradually untangled.
From then on, coloring became a way for me to take care of myself – simple, gentle, and didn’t require any special skills. And I realized that coloring pages aren’t just for kids.
My favorite coloring page collection
Each picture below brings me a different feeling. Sometimes it's joy, sometimes it's peace, sometimes it's just a little cuteness in the middle of a tiring day.
1. Baby Monkey and Soft Pillow
I often choose this picture at the end of the day. When my mind is tired and I just want to "curl up like that little monkey", this picture helps me calm down and lull me to sleep.
2. Puppy Wearing a Christmas Wreath
Painting this picture reminds me of winter, of the warmth of the house, of the moment of wrapping presents and listening to Christmas music. Even in the middle of June, I can still create my own festive atmosphere.
3. Dog and Cat – A Gentle Hug
I chose this painting when I felt lonely. Each color block I chose not only beautifies the painting, but also seems to be hugging myself.
4. Little Bat Sitting on a Halloween Pumpkin
I color this painting when I need a little fun energy. This little bat always makes me laugh, no matter how tired I am.
5. A Pair of Funny Dolphins Wearing Flowers
I like to color this painting on sunny mornings. It makes me feel like I am on a dreamy island, where everything is free and full of joy.
6. Sea Turtles and Underwater Treasures
When I feel my mind is in turmoil, I choose this painting to remind myself to slow down. Layer upon layer of coral, stone upon stone – I paint as if I am cleaning up my mind.

How I Use Coloring Pages for Self-Care
You don’t need a big reason to color. All you need is a few minutes – and a free coloring page. Here are some ways I make coloring a small part of my daily routine:
Color in the morning, when things are quiet
Before I start work, I pick a simple picture and color in a few blocks. This makes me feel like I’m in control of my day.
Color after work, as a way to “cleanse” my mind
When I turn off my computer and my head is still buzzing with work, I just pick up a picture and color it. Even if it’s only for 15 minutes, it’s the moment I get back to myself.
Coloring instead of a diary
I used to keep an emotional diary. But sometimes I don’t know what to write. I pick a picture that’s close to my mood and just color it. The colors tell me things that I can’t express.
Create a coloring corner in the room
I keep a set of printed pictures and some colored pencils on my desk. When I need a short break, I sit down and color a few lines.
Give a colored picture as a gift
Once, I colored a cat with a starry sky background for my best friend. It wasn't elaborate, but my friend was touched because she knew I spent time and effort to make that gift.
Why do coloring pages make me feel so peaceful?
Maybe because coloring doesn't require you to be good at it. I don't need to have the right technique, or to draw well. I just need to... like it.
Coloring also slows me down. When I carefully choose each color, color each small detail, I don't think about anything else. It's a form of "moving meditation" - where my mind can rest without me having to try.
And especially, each picture I choose reflects my mood at that time. Today I choose a picture full of flowers and grass. Tomorrow it could be a picture of a sad bear sitting in the rain. Each picture is like a slice of me – colorful, emotional and real.

Coloring doesn’t solve problems. But it gives me a few minutes of distraction, a few minutes of relief, a few minutes of joy. And sometimes, that’s all it takes to keep going.
If you haven’t tried it yet, print out a picture from the Coloring Pages Center today, sit down with some crayons. And see what happens inside you after the first few strokes.
