Questions on how to classify the cities

Hi

I am developing some mashup, which display the markers representing cities to Google maps. As we move google map, the old markers would be removed and the new markers would be created and displayed.

However, I have some questions here:

How to classify the cities to display them under different situations ? For example, some time, I just display the capital cities and some time I just display the small cities. Is there somebody help me by providing some idea about ?

Another question:
I am doing some research on mashup applications related to google map. I need some open source code to do some experiments. If you have some kind of open source and would like to share with me and to be written in my paper, please let me know.

Thanks,

Erica
