java project

hi

I have integrated the geonames dataset into a strongly typed database (with referential integrity constraints between countries, features, etc..), with a wrapper service written in java (spring/hibernate/postgis), Importers from csv files, and a full-text search (Lucene/solr)

Is there already an Open Source project providing this ? Is anyone interested in my code ? I plan to release it as Open Source if it doesn't exist yet.

Hi David

I don't think it already exists. Sounds like a great idea releasing it as open source. Thanks for offering to release it.

You could also send an email to the GeoNames google groups mailing list to see whether there is interest in the code.

Cheers

Hi David,

I also plan to extract the GIS stuff from my code (that uses Spring/hibernate/ bleeding edge stuff) and would be happy to contribute to the project as soon as I find some spare time...

hi

my project will import data with data check integrity. i notice some mistake for some ADMX and i try to correct them for PPL Eslourenties-Daban (the adm3 code is not properly set and doesn't correspond to any Adm3 (97.65.643) same thing for the Adm4 division Eslourenties-Daban adm2 is 64,65 and wikipedia says it is 64 so i try to correct it but it says that i have not a level > 2.

"the name is locked and may only be updated by users with a user level >= 2. Your current user level is 1"

can i have this rights ?

if not i will modify my code but i think it's a better solution to correct it directly in database

i plan to do data integrity for all country.

PS: the project will be probably RC1 in march. some people have send me some mail to tell me that they are interested in. if some other people are interested please let me know your needs and i will try to take them into account.

cheers

hi mark

thanks a lot for the rights.

i try to understand what adm1 with code 00 means. (fr.00 = france general for instance. is it when we don't know the adm1 code and we know the adm2 code?

Example : feature with id 2983971(monte renoso) has country=FR, adm1Code = 00 and adm2code=2b. When i search an adm with fr.00.2B i don't find a such adm but fr.A5.2B exists and correspond to the right adm2 of monte renoso. does it mean that adm1 is set to 00 when we dont know the right one?. Do you think if i give you a report with adm that can be updated with the right adm1 value will be usefull for you and can be batched

cheers

Hi David

In my understanding '00' should stand for toponyms where a admin code does not make sense like for a river crossing many admin regions. Though some users suggest that it should mean 'unknown' to replace 'null' values completely.
At the moment there is no clear line between the usage of 'null' and '00'. In your example is just means the admin1 code is missing and should be added. If you send me a csv file with correction than I can easily run it and update the missing codes.

Cheers

Hi

here are some news

The project is finished at 99 %, the site is up but i need some machines to put the service on and to offer download (the distribution with webapp and docs and ...takes 50M)

The project is named gisgraphy => the first draft site is www.gisgraphy.com (because my english is not perfect, any errors report would be greatly appreciate). it will be fully available when i will have my own server (hope in june)
