US East Coast Timezone(s)

Hello,

I really like this service you are offering and has helped us out a lot but I have a couple of question about the TimeZone service. We do a lot of travel scheduling so having the correct Time Zone is very important to us.

Miami, FL and Tampa, FL USA
http://ws.geonames.org/search?q=miami&maxRows=1&style=FULL
http://ws.geonames.org/search?q=tampa&maxRows=1&style=FULL
comes back with the timezoneid of America/Nassau

Jacksonville, FL USA
http://ws.geonames.org/search?q=jacksonville&maxRows=1&style=FULL comes back with America/Kentucky/Monticello

Atlanta, GA USA
http://ws.geonames.org/search?q=atlanta&maxRows=1&style=FULL
come back with America/Indiana/Petersburg

My understanding is that the default for the Eastern Time Zone should be America/New_York unless you are in the particular State/County or City.

How are these assignments being made so that we can validate the TimeZoneId for our application?

Thank You,
Kurt

I think America/Nassau for Miami and Tampa is a bug since the Bahamas are another country.

This is fixed and it returns "America/Kentucky/Monticello". It is just the geographically closest timezone name within the same country.

Cheers

Hi Mark
can you please go into the detail on how the timezone file/name is deducted from the geoname database? is it possible to edit it? or is it automatically generated?

Thanks,

Giovanni

We are using shapefiles provided by the US government to determine the timezone. It is not possible to derive it from the dump, nor is it editable.

Best
