United States state names in admin1Codes.txt

Marc,

I note that 25 of the 50 US state names are encoded as "State of X" and the other 25 are encoded as simply "X".

Can we use a consistent format of "X" for the state name?

Although "State of X" is more formal, most United States citizens are accustomed to simply "X" as the name of their state.

Let me know what you think.

Re:United States state names in admin1Codes.txt

Thanks for the hint about posting! Can you please provide an example on how to obtain the states/provinces for any given country via web service? I'm sure that many will appreciate that. I've been searching for hours on just how to do that with no success.

Re:United States state names in admin1Codes.txt

There are at least two approaches.

The first is to use the hierarchy services and get the children of the US:
http://ws.geonames.org/children?geonameId=6252001

another approach is to use the search service and get all ADM1 for the US:
http://ws.geonames.org/search?&maxRows=100&featureCode=ADM1&country=US

Best
