Merge Postal Codes with Gazetteer Data

Hello,

i am interested in using the gazetteer data from http://download.geonames.org/export/dump/ and additionally the separate postal code data from http://download.geonames.org/export/zip/.

I already discovered that there is the table alternate names for the gazetteer data, which contains a small amount of postal codes. By far the amount of postal codes in the gazetteer data is not as much as in the postal code database.

That is why i want to combine the both databases. Is there any standard method how geonames.org does this? Has this already been done? Any suggestions on how to reliably do this?

Thank you very much
