Default language of administrative division names?

Hello all,
When I look in the geoname table at entries A.ADM*, what is the default language (if any) of the geoname.name and geoname.asciiname fields? Is it English, the local ("vernacular") name, something else, or not standardised?

I.e., if I load those entries into my database and I want to be English-centric, do I need to run a routine to go through the alternate_names table and replace the names with English names?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris

The main name in geoname.name is international or English. To be sure I suggest you use the alternatename with explicit English language code and fall back to the main name if no explicit entry is available.

Best Regards
