The Aster project has also published a new release (v2) in October. If somebody happens to know a good download place for aster v2 data, please let me know.

Our first priority for improvements in elevation data is the srtm v4 data from cgiar. The switch to the improved srtm data  will (hopefully) happen in the very near future.
